I noticed on Walt Bailey's site that there was a group called Sweet Sensation back in 1981 (which is the countdown I am betting on for next weekend), and I am wondering if this was the same Sweet Sensation that would hit the top 40 later in the 80s with "Sincerely Yours", "Hooked On You", "Love Child" and "If Wishes Came True"? I'd be totally surprised if this was to be a rarity of two different groups during AT40's run with the same name.

There were two groups named Sweet Sensation. The first had one hit in 1975, "Sad Sweet Dreamer" in 1975. The other group was the late 80's/ early 90's group that would hit number one in 1990 with "If Wishes Came True".
I don't know about 1981, but I'm pretty sure that if there is a Sweet Sensation song, it would be the 1975 song, and not the Dance Trio from the late 1980's.

You mean 1975 (the '70s show that has been suggested as the likely show next week, based on the clues), not 1981 (its apparent '80s counterpart). They are two different groups. The one from 1975 was a British group whose members were mostly if not entirely of black West Indian ethnic origin.

I can't find any evidence of either group recording in 1981. As mentioned, the first SS had one hit in 1975, and the second several in 1989-90, too late for a Casey AT40. (They did make the Hot 100 in 1987 with "Hooked On You", which Premiere used as an optional extra once. The same song made the top 40 in 1989.)

Funny thing--both versions of Sweet Sensation are virtually forgotten about today. If my memory serves correctly, the '75 version released only one album and then disappeared. Not sure the late 80's version did much of anything after hitting #1 with "If Wishes Came True"...

The second SS had no more hits, and I would argue that "If Wishes Came True" is one of the most forgotten number ones ever. However, they did have a solid place in pop music for the two years of 1989 and 1990. I hate to say this, but I actually love their remake of "Love Child" from 1990. That sounds blasphemous to even think!

If 'Sweet sensation' was talked 'bout in '81, it was most likely the soul hit by Stephanie Mills.

I liked it too. I thought it many ways it remained true to the original which helps make it good.

There were two different Sean Pauls in the Top 40 at the same time a few years ago. I can't remember what Ryan said about it, but Charlie Tuna on both AT10 and AT20 mentioned it in a Book of Records feature.

There were also two different Sylvias in the Top 40, the "Pillow Talk" singer in 1973 and the "Nobody" singer in 1982.

That makes three of us, which is rare for me since I normally dislike remakes of classic songs. But I love the composition so much and the dance element added a fresh interpretation with solid vocals and production.
