I was thinking of mentioning this in the "Songs That Should Have Charted Later" thread but it also qualifies for this one.
"I Got You" by Split Enz was very successful up here north of the border in 1980 and massively successful on frontmen Tim and Neil Finns home turf(New Zealand/Australia). I was surprised to see that it only reached #53 on the Hot 100.
Another of their singles from 1982, "Six Months in A Leaky Boat" was also popular, but it didn't even crack the Hot 100.
It was good to see the Finn Bros. finally have great U.S. success with Crowded House later in the decade.

An eye opener for me, "Right Before Your Eyes" by America seemed to receive heavy airplay in my neck of the woods back in '82 and I still hear it played on oldies stations. Very surprised that it did not reach the Top 40 and only peaked at #45.

Nantucket was a huge North Carolina rock band in the late 70s and early 80s.They had some album success.Their biggest song was Heartbreaker and I don't know if it even made the top 100,but it is great.Another song Hidin' From Love got played on Bandstand's Rate A Record. It got low numbers, but it isn't a dance song.

These postings from last month (on page 1 of this thread) just caught my attention: Perhaps someone can answer this for me. I believe that Casey once mentioned that Jim Nabors was the artist with the most charted LPs without ever having a Top 40 record. I believe that Nabors never had a Hot 100 record, correct? Just wondering if he ever released any 45s, or if he had some arrangement where his songs were never released as singles. Jim Nabors has released many singles. But none has ever made the Hot 100. I also checked the Country Hot 100, I didnt see him making the charts their either. I think Pete has a point, besides his Australian imports, his single releases were rare at best. But I found his version of “White Christmas” www.classic45s.com/product_info.php?products_id=20650&cPath=21_30_76However, I don’t know if this “Not for Resale-Radio Station Copy” was ever properly released to the stores.

Here is my list of favorites from this time of year (approximately) that should have made the top 40:
1970 New world coming-Mama Cass 1971 The Pushbike song-Mixtures 1972 Diamonds Are Forever-Shirley Bassey (liked a lot more than "Goldfinger," her only top 40 pop hit in the US) 1973 Across 110th Street-Bobby Womack (a song I never even knew about until a friend taped it for me in 1998) 1974 Bicycle Morning-Billy Sans (never heard until played on an oldies show in 2001--bubbled under the Hot 100 and reminded me of Daniel Boone's "Beautiful Sunday") 1975 Ain't That Peculiar-Diamond Reo 1976 Lazy Love-New City Jam Band (didn't make Hot 100) 1977 Dedication-Bay City Rollers (struggled up to #60--had a classic "prom time/end of school year" sound but was probably released two months too early) 1978 Let It Go, Let It Flow-Dave Mason 1979 Run Home Girl-Sad Cafe (had a late spring feel to it0 1980 Where Does the Lovin' Go-David Gates 1981 Dreamer-The Association 1982 Anyone could See-Irene Cara (just missed top 40) 1983 This Time It Must Be Love-Donnie Iris (missed Hot 100) 1984 Plane Love-Jeffrey Osborne (much catchier than his ballads but only charted R&B) 1985 Restless Heart-John Waite (liked this--and all his other singles--much better than the monotonous "Missing You") 1986 Born Yesterday-Everly Brothers (charted AC only0 1987 World Shut Your Mouth-Julian Cope 1988 Dreams I Dream-Dave Mason/Phoebe Snow (Top-20 AC hit I wanted very much to cross over to pop but never made Hot 100) 1989 Rough Night in Jericho-Dreams So Real (actually a late 1988 song I still listened to a lot through spring 1989--was an AOR hit, I believe)

Another great song that didn't enter the top 40:
Great beat, better than "You Keep Me Hangin' On" any day!

1982's Poco - Shoot for the Moon. Although this classic reached half way up the HOT 100 stopping at #50...it never did justice to it's title and cracked into the Top 40. Great song none the less.

Bang the Drum All Day by Todd Rungren never made the top 40,although it does get some airplay today and is a popular song played at sporting events.
