One group that leads the pack during the AT40 days is the Who. "Love, Reign O'er Me," "The Real Me," "Post Card," "Slip Kid," "905," "Long Live Rock," "5:15," "Don't Let Go the Coat," "Eminence Front" and "It's Hard" all were released as singles. None of them hit the Top 40 (some didn't hit the Hot 100 at all). You would think most of them at least would have reached #40.

And that doesn't include such 1960s (pre-AT40) non top 40 hits as "My Generation", "I Can't Explain", "I'm a Boy", "Pictures of Lily", "Substitute", etc. I think the Who are among the best examples of a clearly great rock band to whom the top 40 singles lists don't do justice. Some hits, yes, but not nearly as many or big enough to approximate their popularity and impact.

Perhaps someone can answer this for me. I believe that Casey once mentioned that Jim Nabors was the artist with the most charted LPs without ever having a Top 40 record. I believe that Nabors never had a Hot 100 record, correct?
Just wondering if he ever released any 45s, or if he had some arrangement where his songs were never released as singles.

Jim Nabors has released many singles. But none has ever made the Hot 100. I also checked the Country Hot 100, I didnt see him making the charts their either.

Two immediately jump to mind:
"Ch-Ch-Ch Cherie," The Johnny Average Band (#53, 1981) "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee," Jerry Lee Lewis (#41, 1973)

If I gave it enough time and effort, I could probably dig up hundreds of songs that qualify. So here's just a few "perfect pop singles" that fell short of the 40: "I Wonder Who's Out Tonight"--The Burns Sisters Band (86, did not chart) "I Knew the Bride (When She Used To Rock and Roll)"--Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit (85/86, #77) Going back to the 70s: "I Wanna Stay With You"--Gallagher and Lyle (76, #49) "Try (Try to Fall In Love)"--Cooker (74, #88) "It's a Cryin' Shame"--Gayle McCormick (71, #44) These are all songs that I thought good enough to seek out and buy the 45. There's plenty of others...

Wax; Right Between The Eyes #43, 1986 Megadittos on Wax. As I said said above, a perfect pop single. Maybe Andrew Gold should have put his name on it rather than the unknown band name.

I personally think "Hot Hot Hot" by Buster Poindexter should have entered the top 40, even if it had to peak at #40.
"A Good Heart" by Feargal Sharkey was a great song too, and it was from this time period in 1986, if I recall. Heard it on the radio a lot in early 1986. That should have been a top 40 hit, IMO.
"State of the World" by Janet Jackson should have made the top 40, and it was considered for a "historical 8th single" from the Rhythm Nation 1814 album, but at the last minute, they decided to pull the plug on the single release. I have a feeling that, had it been released as a single, it probably would've peaked no higher than #8 on AT40 (after all, it did peak at #4 on CT40 and on Rick Dees, the only song from that album that didn't hit #1 or #2 on R&R's chart).
