As my primary over-the-air station has dropped AT40, I find myself having to experiment with the possibilities of recording a streaming show. I've got a Windows 8 laptop, and I'm looking for some free, idiot-proof, software, preferably something malware/virus-proof and that I don't have to necessarily sit there and monitor while recording.
{chuckle} I know... not too picky, am I?
I currently use Audicity 1.3 Beta for editing (on a Win XP desktop), but have never attempted any recording on this Windows 8 laptop until now.
What's the latest and greatest out there for software?

I would be interested in the answer to this as well. It seems to be more difficult with each new version of Windows to record system audio. In XP, Audacity's input selector would usually show stereo mix or "What U Hear". It became more difficult in Vista and I have yet to find it in Windows 7. Keep using Audacity--it's awesome!--Good quality, easy editing, many format save options and even "Timer Record" (under the "Transport" tab.) The solution I use has been mentioned before: a short stereo patch cable from headphone or line out to line (preferably) or mic in. I use a headphone jack splitter to allow me to plug in headphones or speakers to monitor the sound. Problem with my Toshiba laptop (with recently installed Windows 8) is that it has only a mono mic input jack. Any ideas? Outboard usb sound card? I have an old M Audio Transit (no longer manufactured), but there are no drivers for Windows 8. Maybe a Griffin iMic?

Rarmaradio is brilliant. No problems whatsoever. It allows you to record the stream in any format you prefer, even its original format, typically aac and what's best most of the stations are available and not flash based like iheart.com but like darnall42, I have only tested it on Windows 7.

Thanks for pointing out the Rarmaradio software. Installed the program and determined I could record multiple streams at the same time. The perfect solution to when AT 40 the 70's is playing on 1 station and then AT 40 the 80's starts on another.

I settled on Free Sound Recorder 9.3.1 . I have yet to go thru and edit out commercials for the last few shows I've recorded, but a quick scan indicates that it's doing the job. Now, if only some stations didn't crap-out on their streams, or Flash software bomb-out mid-stream, I'd be right in Heaven.
