Accordingly to Wikipedia, it was 40 years ago this week that the ABC network premiered a 3-minute animated short during their Saturday morning cartoon lineup. It was called "Three Is A Magic Number," the first in set of education themed shorts that we come to know as the franchise, Schoolhouse Rock.
On a personal note, I was living in England at the time this occurred, so I did not see any shorts first run until 1975, when they were in the America Rock series.

They aired Schoolhouse Rock in the original run from 1973 until 1980. If I remember correctly, the first genre was "Multiplication Rock" in 1973, and then there was "Grammar Rock" in 1974, followed by "America Rock" in 1975, and by around 1979, they debuted "Science Rock". If I remember correctly, there was an expansion to the Grammar Rock series in 1993 - 2 more animated shorts debuted: "Busy Prepositions" and "The Tale of Mr. Morton", the latter subject being about sentence structure.
In 1982 or 1983, they added a new series "Scooter Computer & Mr. Chips" - which focused on computers that are now outdated.
I don't remember seeing Schoolhouse Rock at all during the 1983-84 TV season (the only show that I watched during that time on ABC was The Monchhchis/Little Rascals/Richie Rich Show, so maybe it did air later that morning), but I do remember seeing "Interplanet Janet" sometime before the summer of 1985.
By 1994, if I recall, they added the series "Money Rock", which continued until 1996.
ABC aired Schoolhouse Rock twice during The Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show in the mid-90s, but in its last year on ABC, it appeared before 10:30 a.m. ET sometime during Disney's "1 Saturday Morning" block, though they limited the airings to "Grammar Rock", "Multiplication Rock" and "America Rock", if I remember correctly.
ABC officially stopped airing Schoolhouse Rock in 1997 - the last short that aired was "Naughty Number Nine", if I recall.
The 2002 DVD set commemorating the run's 30th anniversary contained "Money Rock", "The Weather Show" (which was banned due to trademark issues with The Ringling Bros./Barnum & Bailey Circus's slogan), and a new but unaired short about voting, as an expansion of the "America Rock" series.
Schoolhouse Rock was revived in 2009 with the debut of "Earth Rock" - focusing on environmental issues.

My favorite shorts:
"The Good Eleven" "The Four-Legged Zoo" "Electricity, Electricity" "Great American Melting Pot" "No More Kings" "Rufus Xavier Sarsparilla" "Fireworks"
"I'm Just a Bill", "Conjunction Junction", "Three is a Magic Number", and "Interplanet Janet" were probably the most overrated shorts in each of the original four genres.
