For another question, I was looking at the chart of 1/5/80 and saw that a remake of the classic Burt Bacharach song, "Don't Make Me Over" was at number 79 sung by Jennifer Warnes. It didn't go much further up the chart. Why that stuck out in my head is because another remake of the song was on the last chart of the decade, 12/23/89, sung by Sybil and actually had a run into the Top 20. I'm pretty sure that this is the only song to be on both the first chart of the 80's and the last chart of the 80's, unless I missed M doing, "I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson" on the 1980 chart In fact, I doubt that another song bookended a decade besides this one...though to be fair if Benny Mardones had started a little earlier in 1980 and a little later in 1989, he would have had the exact same song bookend the decade. Done with my randomness... for now.

That's something I didnt know about that song. Never heard the Jennifer Warnes version but I always liked the Sybil version. To go back to another reply you had woolebull. It was regarding Tusk. I have to agree what a weird time it spent on the chart. It's run in the top 40 lasted from 10/16 until 12/15/79 but it's jump in the top 100 and it's departure was one of the weirdest i've ever seen. I guess that's what happen when Lindsay Buckingham had the idea for the double album Tusk and tried to take the sound in a different direction. It churned out a few great hits but it was considered a failure because it was suppose to be something that changed music to a degree.

They used to kill it on 102 JAMZ. Actually, I don't remember hearing it on 107.5 or 98.7, but did on 102...all the time! For some reason, the chart movement of "Tusk" always fascinated me, probably because the first Top 40 I had a copy of was 10/20/79 and it went from 40-15. However, I did not realize how close the chart life of "Heartache Tonight" was tied to "Tusk". I always lumped "Tusk" and "Still" together because of the moves those two songs had on 10/20/79 but not until tonight, when I was reviewing the 1/12/80 chart, did I realize that "Heartache Tonight" was so much more connected with "Tusk". Both debuted the same week, both exited the same week, both had ridiculous jumps and horrendous falls. The exception: "Heartache" went to number one in the exact same time frame that "Tusk" hit eight. 15 crazy weeks for those two songs!

102 Jamz well I remember them back in the '90s. The early 90's were my last days of high school and I was into the R&B and rap scene then. I still love the old school music from back then. 98.7 and 107.5 and G105 in Durham were the ones usually I listened to. I do remember 105 playing Sybil quite a bit also.
It's funny you bring up that other obscure #1 song from '79. Still, I had never heard that song until I started obtaining copies of AT40's. I actually like that song very much. I like the album version better though. It's something about the Commodores, I always loved their sound. Sail on was my favorite, that song actually hit #1 in Record World's countdown. I got a copy for Christmas, Joel Whitburn's new book "Hit Records".
Now you bring up the craziness of the charts. 1982 was unreal. Songs staying locked in their positions for weeks on end. But that had to do with how Billboard tabulated everything with the charts. You know Foreigner had to be dumbfounded by not hitting number #1 with "Waiting for a Girl Like You" in 1981 and 1982. I think it stayed number 2 for 10 weeks.

"Still" was a song I knew (I graduated high school around the same time you did), but I didn't know how popular it was until I got my first book of number one hits. The Commodores are a staple in my music rotation, no doubt!
1982 was unreal. I think my favorite thing someone pointed out to me was on the first week of November of 1982 when the biggest dropper within the Top 40 was "Jack and Diane", plummeting from number one all the way to...number two. The other songs either went up, or if they dropped they dropped out of the Top 40. I'm sure Foreigner had to be banging their head around this time 31 years ago...and they still had a few weeks to wait for Hall and Oates to not make their dreams come true!

As far as I'm concerned, this is the only version of "Don't Make Me Over" that folks will ever need to hear:

Yup. I'll have to agree also. There aren't many remakes better than the original.
Woolebull, I always figured your name is an homage to the Durham Bulls mascot. I read in an another post that it was. I always have pulled for the teams from Durham. The Bulls and the Blue Devils!!!

Your a good man, Woolebull. Us Duke fans have to stick together. Living in NC and I was born and raised here, the ration of Duke fans to Carolina fans are not in our favor. Take my life for instance. My wife, daughter, mom, sister and most of my cousins are Carolina fans. Me and my dad are Duke fans. My son is almost two so I will start turning him into a Duke fan when he understands the game more. There is no other place better than Cameron Indoor!

Even my wife says that Cameron is the best place and she is a huge Carolina fan. I cant get my mom and sister to think that way. My sister got her masters at Carolina but she was already diehard Tar heel.
