The biggest hits of the 70s and 80s to be played only once on AT40 would be some of those that were played on the 1970 year end countdown, but never as an extra or LDD or in the 70s decade countdown, correct?
So which songs would these be? And which was the biggest hit of the 70s to be played only once, only on that countdown 42 years ago?

So which songs would these be? Any song that was on the chart and fell out of the top 40 prior to the July 11, 1970. I can tell you the No. 1 songs offhand. Without looking at every show (again, not enough time to do so) to see which ones would later be used for LDDs/extras), those songs are: * "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" -- B.J. Thomas. * "Venus" -- Shocking Blue. * "I Want You Back" -- The Jackson 5. * "Thank You (Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Agin)" -- Sly and the Family Stone. * "Bridge Over Troubled Water" -- Simon & Garfunkel. * "Let It Be" -- The Beatles. * "ABC" -- The Jackson 5. * "American Woman"/"No Sugar Tonight" -- The Guess Who. Ray Steven's " Everything Is Beautiful" was still in the top 40 on the debut show (aired July 4 and using the July 11 chart), and The Beatles' "The Long and Winding Road" was played through the show that featured the July 25 chart. The last No. 1 song to have peaked prior to AT40's debut -- "The Love You Save" by the Jackson 5 -- was played on shows airing through at least mid-August 1970. Brian

Yes, so maybe it is one of those songs, if any of them were not either on the Dec 1979 show or played as an extra or LDD. I know some of them were on the show in 1979, because I played that show live on the radio! I wonder if Eddie Holman was played more than once. Or the Jaggerz.

All number ones songs from the year 1970 were heard in October or November 1978 as part of the AT40 archive segment.

If we choose to define the size of a hit as it's peak position. So it's either Hey There Lonely Girl or Travelin' Band or The Rapper or Vehicle, assuming that at least one of those songs was never played again on AT40. Annnnnd I guess we are down to either Eddie Holman or the Jaggerz because neither Travelin' Band nor Vehicle made the Top 80 of 1970 and I wonder why not? And this ALSO means that, by definition, either CCR or Ides Of March would be the biggest 1970s hit to NEVER be played on AT40?

Not to beat a dead horse, but do any of you experts, with and without spreadsheets, know whether or not this is true - that Travelin' Band and Vehicle were the two biggest hits of the 1970s to never be played on American Top 40?

^ I already confirmed that such is the case in the 70s show thread the other day.

I suppose this would also arguably make Ma Belle Amie the biggest 1970s hit to never be played on the show. It's also kind of cool that Tony Burrows performed on three songs on the very first AT40. I wonder how long it was before that happened again? And all of those three songs were between #16 and #11!
