I know Casey repeated the story told by the writer of Indian Reservation at least in 2 shows from 1971. The first time I heard it without reading Rob Durkee's book and finding out the "real" story behind the tale, I couldn't believe that was true. I just wonder if Casey and the rest of the staff actually believe the story at the time or were they taking it with a grain of salt from the beginning.

Funny you mention this...I just heard the Paul Revere & the Raiders version on the episode of Rock, Roll, & Remember about 10 minutes ago.

That version by the Raiders certainly ranked as one of the more startling remakes I've ever heard, since the the orginal version by British singer Don Fardon in 1968 was a local smash here in LA at KHJ & Casey's KRLA (opposite KHJ newcomer Charlie Tuna, who came to KHJ a year earlier) when I was in the 10th grade.
I have no reason not to believe that story that Casey told about how that song came to exist; that was certainly a very chilling tale, to put it mildly.
