Andy Williams, who was most famous for the Christmas songs “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year” and “Happy Holiday / It’s The Holiday Season,” died early today (9/25/12) of bladder cancer. He was 84.
Williams had his own TV variety show from 1962-71. He had 18 gold albums and three more platinum LP’s. He had over 50 pop chart singles, including the 1957 #1 “Butterfly” and the 1963 #2, “Can’t Get Used To Losing You.” Ironically, although he’s closely identified with the song “Moon River,” he never released the song commercially as a single. Instead, “Moon River” would be a hit for Henry Mancini and Jerry Butler in 1961.
At least two of Andy’s songs would be sung by Elvis Presley’’ -- ”The Hawaiian Wedding Song” and “Are You Sincere.” His chart span was roughly 1956-72. In 1971, he had one of three versions of the theme song from the movie "Love Story" that made the top 40. In 1972, Andy had his last top 40 hit with "Love Theme From 'The Godfather' (Speak Softly Love)."
An expanded obituary and salute to Andy Williams from Rob Durkee is coming up later on today (9/25/12).

I'm sure that Barry Scott will do a tribute to Andy Williams on "The Lost 45's".
