I can't narrow it down to one song, but I think if I could, my nominee would be something by either Gladys Knight or Karen Carpenter.

I'd say Bohemian Rhapsody. Freddie goes high and low in that one!

I'd say Bohemian Rhapsody. Freddie goes high and low in that one! Elton John does the same in "Crocodile Rock" and "Bennie and the Jets", two standouts vocally. I'd also collectively add Al Green's hits, and most of Donna Summer's.

I would say Sammy Johns in "Chevy Van" lol He must have been shaking that vocal like Cheech & Chong did in their van on "Up in Smoke"

It is almost impossible to determine the best vocal of the 1970s. There are so many great singers. For females, Barbra Streisand is among the best and I think her best performance was on a song called "My Heart Belongs to Me" from 1977. As for males, Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson ae hard to beat, but I think Eugene Record did it. So my vote goes to "Have You Seen Her" by the Chi-Lites.

Barbara Streisand in either "My Heart Belongs To Me" or "Evergreen" - take your pick. Not a huge fan of hers, but both were phenomenal. Roberta Flack in the "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" comes to mind as well. Somebody mentioned the Carpenters...Karen's performance in "Close To You" is another that's tough to beat.

Marvin Gaye, "What's Going On." Or Edwin Starr, "War."

I agree with many that have been mentioned. A different one is Melissa Manchester. Has to be a top 10 hit? Then either "Midnight Blue" or "Don't Cry Out Loud".

Truly one of the most stirring vocal performances I have ever heard by any artist. I absolutely concur. Not only was the vocal performance a classic, so was the musical production. While some may view Streisand's best work as "Evergreen" or "The Way We Were," "My Heart Belongs To Me" will always be my favorite.

Streisand? *yawn* I'll take the exciting and upbeat sound of Andrea True and "More, More, More" ;D

While no one loves that song more than me, even I wouldn't be so bold (insane?) as to suggest hers was one of the best top ten vocals of the 1970s.

Yeah, how dare you share your appreciation of one of the most celebrated female vocalists ever in the Best Top Ten Vocal Of The 1970's thread. It doesn't offend anyone and people may get the impression that you have excellent taste in music. Very unwelcome traits to have in this site.

Seriously though, my adolescent instincts win this one, with one of my favorite bands, Rare Earth. Their "(I Know) I'm Losing You" fits the criteria here quite well, complete with an a cappella opening.

David Gates' vocals on "If" was smooth and sultry......played it a lot back then and still listen to it today. BTW Telly "Kojak" Salvalas did IMHO a great spoken version of this song
