I would throw out anything by Leif Garrett as being a candidate for this honor...he was painful on the ears.
Tempted to say Freddie Fender, but I'm not sure it's entirely fair to say his vocal was that bad--I think it was more the songs he sang.
Another that comes to mind is Hot Chocolate--even through I like their 3 big hits from the late 70's, the lead singer's voice was kind of odd--sounded like he had thrown back a few too many at the bar before recording those, especially "You Sexy Thing".

Despite loving the song at the time, I now find Mary MacGregor's quiet, wispy vocal on "Torn Between Two Lovers" awful. The same could be said for Samantha Sang's "Emotion." I'm sure the producers' intent was to have the songs sung that way, but I just find it irritating. Even MacGregor's other top 40 hit that I still love, "Good Friend," fits into this category. Clearly MacGregor could sing songs only one way. Would love to have seen what she did with "Stairway To Heaven!"

That's funny--I actually find that both of those songs have grown on me over the years. Used to not really like either one, but they are not a bad listen on the AT40 reruns. I will say I am surprised that "Torn" was a #1 song--doesn't seem like it should have done that well.

When "Torn..." hit #1 Casey told a story about how MacGregor, early in her career, led a band where she would scream and shout out hard rock and blues songs, similarly to Janis Joplin. This eventually ravaged her voice to the point of needing surgery and extensive rest, so when she resumed singing she had to do so softly.

Here's something you may not know about "TBTL":
It went to #3 on the country charts.

Yeah esp the line....makin' love to you is all I wanna do. Quite creepy actually...if that's really true, I'm not sure I will ever hear that song the same. Not sure why you would include that line if it was about your kid...maybe it started off as being about Mya and then ended up as something different? Well, thankfully you can reserve your unsettling feelings for something truly cringe-worthy as the connection to her daughter was innocent. From what I recall, Minnie explained that the melody for "Lovin' You" was created as a distraction for her daughter when she was a baby so that Minnie and her husband could spend time together. Her daughter was in the studio the day the song was recorded. Thus, the segment at the end. Of course, there are people who will take a beautiful family moment and attempt to turn it into something shocking for gullible readers.

I'm creeped out by the Beach Boys' "Wendy," which Brian Wilson wrote just after the birth of his daughter. "I never thought a guy could cry / 'til you made it with another guy." WTF, Brian???

Five words: John Travolta's "Let Her In". Fortunately he redeemed himself a few years later with his Grease hits.

I think I'd have to go with the Pipkins and "Gimme Dat Ding" from 1970.

I think I'd have to go with the Pipkins and "Gimme Dat Ding" from 1970. I don't think that really counts, as it was clearly a novelty song and only serious ones were specified. If we're talking about novelties, two weeks in a row this month I've heard AT40's with Daddy Dewdrop's "Chick-a-Boom". Doncha jus' luv it?--no, quite the contrary.

Back to "Loving You":
What if the song is about "the deed" with whoever she shacked up with and had Mya, and then the result (her love for Mya)? (A combo love song?) I'm just saying...did no research.

Wow, I thought Mary MacGregor's voice was normal because it to me sounded like a northern accent! (She was born in St. Paul, Minnesota.)

This is easy. Anything by Michael McDonald. I hate the sound of his voice.

Wait, I thought we were actually talking about *bad* singing? "I hate ______'s voice" is not the same thing. Plenty of annoying vocalists can actually, y'know... sing. I nominate "Stay Awhile" by the Bells -- truly a dreadful, off-key vocal. Fingernails-on-a-blackboard.
