I wonder what made the original song from 1963 catch on and go all the way to #1? Undoubtedly the novelty factor. I'm guessing that's the same reason Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki" was #1 earlier the same year. At some point in the early '80s, I remember Casey answering a QL about foreign language songs going to #1. He played a clip of "Sukiyaki," "Dominique," etc.

He played a clip of "Sukiyaki," "Dominique," etc. Casey played a bit of each foreign-language #1 in the show from Mar 17, 1984. That question (and answer) had appeared (by alledgedly different "letter writers") in the shows from 2/17/73, 9/14/74, 6/12/76, and 12/11/82.
