Does anybody know on exactly how many shows Casey mentioned the Singing Nun? I swear, she was talked about on more AT40s than any other artist in history!

Most recently, I think it was in 2005 when D.H.T. (another Belgian act) was on AT20.

The Singing Nun was mentioned several times during Casey Kasem's initial stint as "AT40" host:"Dominique" was played as an "AT40 Special" on a September 1970 show,it was also played on both of the "Disappearing Acts" specials which aired in July 1973 & April 1975-Finally,there was an update on a July 1978 show in which Casey mentioned that The Singing Nun aka Jeanine Deckers was being hounded by the Belgian government for failure to pay taxes. Subsequently,The Singing Nun died of an apparent suicide in March 1985-I'm surprised that Casey never mentioned that on "AT40".

Casey also mentioned her in the February 1975 show that ran last weekend, as one of only six foreign-born women to have had #1 hits in the U.S. to date. But that's what I'm saying. For a one-hit wonder who never again got to even #100 in Billboard, the Singing Nun received a whole lot of mentions on AT40! Makes me wonder if Casem (or Bustany) had a fetish for the woman.... Subsequently,The Singing Nun died of an apparent suicide in March 1985-I'm surprised that Casey never mentioned that on "AT40". He was probably too choked up to speak of it! ;D

I dunno, I think I heard Casey tell the story of Al Jarvis, the first disc jocky and how in the end no one wanted to hire him in about four different shows!

By the way,the information I provided on The Singing Nun came directly from Rob Durkee's "AT40-The Countdown Of The Century" & Pete Battistini's "AT40-The 70's".

I count at least 5 AT40's with the Al Jarvis story: 10/30/76, 5/20/78, 11/1/80, 2/2/85, and 1/23/88. Plus I think he told it at least once on Casey's Top 40, and maybe on his later shows as well.

The Singing Nun references are all about how AT40 seemed to have an intense interest in disappearing acts. That's one reason they did 2 specials for such acts.

All three 80s shows were part of the AT40 Flashback series. As a result, the story was heard on that series three times in the span of as many months.

Another favorite story was the Johnny Ray Cry story. I know of 4 or 5 shows it was told on. It was used for sure on 5/21/83, 3/7/87and I believe 1/26/85. It was tied into a song on the first 2 as the songs mentioned him. I think it was on a 70s show also but I dont remember the date. John

I really don't see anything wrong with all the Singing Nun references, especially when it somehow ties into the current chart, whether it's a Belgian act, foreign language song, or a one-hit wonder.
How many times did Casey tell the story about that man in the wheelchair rolling across Canada? It seemed like that was mentioned every time he played "St. Elmo's Fire."
Or what about The Beatles occupying the top 5 spots in one week? Or Mariah's first 10 singles all hitting #1. Even Ryan Seacrest mentions that and he rarely brings up stats.
Anyway, I think it's great when fun stories from the past are mentioned. And I think the Singing Nun is especially interesting. You have a gay nun from Belgium who has the only French language-song to hit #1 in America and then she goes and kills herself. Morbid and tragic, but definitely fascinating.

It's just that when the old shows are run out of sequence, the same stories have a way of turning up over and over again in relatively short periods of time. Kinda like how "Sunshine Superman" recently came up twice as an original extra.

John I recall Shadoe talking about Johnnie Ray on another AT40 in early 1990 (maybe relating to "We Didn't Start the Fire"?) Casey might have done the same on CT40. Unfortunately, Johnnie died not long afterwards.
