What exactly was the special show that aired on the 4th of July weekend in 1986, and on May 28, 1988?
Was the 1988 AT40 special "The Triathlon Of Rock & Roll", in honor of the 1988 Olympics?

Not sure about the Triathlon of Rock and Roll special, but the 4th of July '86 special was the Giants of Rock and Roll (where a poll was taken of various radio PDs and DJs as to who were the best acts of the rock era) and the May 28, 1988 special was the Top 40 Newcomers of the 80's, which was comprised of the top artists who first charted during the 80's. The 7/5/86 special I have not heard yet, but the 5/28/88 special was a fun one, especially for a guy like me who really got into top 40 music as a kid during the 80's.

Well they did play the Olympics theme during that show. The rankings for the Triathlon special are comprised of acts who have charted in the Top 40 in the 1960's and 1970's and who have charted in the Top 10 in the 1980's.

May 28, 1988 was the special about the new comers of the 80s so far, there was also a regular show by a sub host.

Actually, the regular May 28, 1988 countdown was indeed hosted by Casey Kasem that week. I remember downloading that particular episode last fall, and I listened to the full broadcast on my iPod on New Year's Eve. I don't think there was a sub-hosted show until early in July that year (Scott Evans at the mic). I wonder if Premiere will play "The Triathlon of Rock & Roll" this coming summer, seeing this year is an Olympic year? I also know this much about the "Triathlon" special - the #40 jingle was a lot different than any of the other 3 regularly heard. And I think Led Zeppelin was #40 on that survey. Not sure if they played "Fool In The Rain" or "All Of My Love" during that show.

Wow, that triathlon show seems really random and ultimately not a whole lot of meaning to it.

Yes, you are right, the sub host episode was in July, when Casey did the special and Evans the regular.

I do have one question regarding the Triathlon special:
When Paul McCartney was at #1 on that special, they played a medley, and then they played a full song "Say Say Say" - a duet with Michael Jackson.
What I would like to know is, in the medley, was "Wonderful Christmastime" included in the medley? I'd be totally surprised if it was, seeing it was July.

Since we're talking about specials, Rick Dees did a special in 1988 which featured the top 40 #2 hits of the 1980's, which I remember being a fun listen. Does anyone know if Casey ever did such a show (or similar) either on AT40 (second run--we know one was not done during the 1970-88 run) or on CT40?
BTW, if I remember correctly, Dees' #1 song on that countdown of #2 hits was not Foreigner's "Waiting For a Girl Like You", as it presumably would have been if the same special had been done on AT40 - rather it was MJ's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'".

As far as I know, there was no such special during the second run of AT40. During my years of listening to CT40 from January 1990 onward, aside from the year-end countdowns, the only special shows I remember were the "Top 40 Dance Songs of the 1980s" (in which MJ's "Billie Jean" was #1) and the "Top 40 Summer Songs of the 1980s" (in which Lionel Richie and Diana Ross's "Endless Love" was #1). Unless a special devoted to #2 songs aired in 1989, chances are there was no such special. It seems as if Rick Dees' special countdowns are so unique and clever, and Casey Kasem doesn't seem to match them.

Regarding Casey's Top 40 there was some sort of British artist countdown at some point I think and the Top 40 Million Sellers of the 80s which was on Thanksgiving weekend 1990. The only "special" show I know of in the second run would be the Y2K special that was available the same weekend as the Top 50 of the 90s was.

A list of CT40 specials can be found at: www.at40fan.info/at40/ct40.htmlI also only remember the Y2K special being the only special on AT40 during its second run.

Thats the one I'm curious about, the Y2K special. Anyone have a list of that top40 countdown?
