I was 14 in 2001, and IMO that year overall was pretty sucky for pop music. I was much more into 70's/80's stuff then, so in that sense, I guess it is accurate as it's still my favorite era. As far as new music goes, more like 16-20.

I was 14 in 1985, so I'll buy into this theory.

I turned 14 in 1987. At the time, George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" was climbing the charts, so I guess that's why I find it so fascinating to read about stations dealing with songs with controversial lyrics.

I don't agree with this at all. My favorite year was 1973, when I was ten. 1977 was not that spectacular, although I listened to almost every AT40 show that year and carefully wrote them down.

So tonight on "Criminal Minds", Dr. Spencer Reid said that the most formative year for music for an individual is their 14th year. I find this statement true, but not in the way most people think it means. I began to develop my understanding of popular music around 13 or 14, but not necessarily for the music that was popular when I was 13 or 14. My favorite music is centered around 1970 or 1993.

I was 14 in 1982. I would say kind of to this theory. It does fall into my favorite era of 1981-1984.

Right on, I think that is true about 13-14 yr olds "growing their wings" in music. I also think older siblings can really cause a positive (or negative) influence on people.

I don't necessarily buy into this "fact". I think 1983 was the best year for music ever, and I was 20 at the time.
Overall, I think the '80s were the best decade, but there were some peaks and valleys. The periods of spring 1981, Jan-Aug '82, late 1987 and the first half of '88 were on the weak side. Everything else about the decade was great!
I also love the late '70s and early '90s, but not much before or since, except for the odd things here and there.

This theory is close for me. My first record bought was "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics, which was released in 1983. I was 14 in 1984. I like the late 80's more than the early, however, with 86-88 being favorites. What is my favorite song of all time, The Power Station's "Bang A Gong" was released in 1985. Yup, pretty close assessment. I Googled it, and it seems this is where that idea came from: Forever Young? In Some Ways, Yes

I turned 14 in 1974, and while there was good stuff that year, the following years up until I got out of high school in '78 were of more interest to me.
