So tonight on "Criminal Minds", Dr. Spencer Reid said that the most formative year for music for an individual is their 14th year. I am lucky - born in 1969, and I think 1983 is the greatest year in music (hands down). What do you guys think? Other birth years and your 14th year? Could it be "kind of" true?

I like the year and all but would not call it my most formative. I have two older sisters, one is 7 years older, the other 3. I'd say 83-85 were still. Yes I was young but that's the first ones I really remember.

I turned 14 in 1999. That was also the year I started listening to pop music again on a regular basis. I can vaguely remember hearing a few pop songs from the late 80s back when I was a real young age - i.e. back when they were current, but it was 1999 when I started listening regularly, and have ever since. So, from my own experience, I'd say it's pretty accurate.
Is 1999 my favorite year in music? Not even close. But, I don't necessarily think whether or not it's my favorite year factors in all that heavily.

Don't agree with this. I would say ages 16-20 were my favorite years. That would be 1982-86 in my case.

My favorite period for top 40 music was no doubt from the summer of '83 through the summer of '88 (with 1985 being my favorite overall year). There were some short periods in there where there was a lull in the amount of good songs (early 1984, the fall of 1986 to the spring of '87 come to mind). But that would cover the period from roughly my 10th to 15th Birthdays.
On the other hand, I also love 1977 - '80 (with '79 being my other favorite year), which doesn't fit this profile at all. Guess there must have been many happy times riding around in the backseat of my parents burnt orange station wagon and listening to the radio. Several of those songs have memories for me even though I was still a little tyke.

That would be 1994 for me(yes I'm young). That was the time period when grunge/alternative rock were really skyrocketing and I was huge into that stuff as a teenager. Since it died though in 1998 I really haven't listened to it since.
The 70s/80s stuff is way more durable and lasting. I've always been old school though.

I was 14 in July 1993-June 1994 and while I like the music from that time, it's definitely not my favorite; that distinction goes to the music from the later half of the 80s.

I was 14 in 1974 and that is one of my fave years musically but my fave years are 72, 73, 78 and 79. So it goes with the philosophy of the theory anyway.

I had heard a similar thing about your favorite musical year being your 10th grade year, and it didn't fit me...I like 85-86 OK, but it's not my top choice.
However, the Criminal Minds theory works great for me as my 14th year stretched from Dec. 1982 - Dec. 1983. 1983 is also my favorite year for music!

By the way, I stopped watching "Criminal Minds" after the sixth season because I thought the show had really jumped the shark.
JJ leaves the BAU for the Defense Department. Or does she? Prentiss is killed by an old enemy. Or is she? Ashley Seaver is now a permanent part of the BAU. Or is she?
Make up your bloody minds already! Geez....

The philosophy doesn't work for me. I was 14 in '76 and consider it a somewhat bland year in music. My favourite time periods are '71-'74 and then '84-'87. And I could also add in late 60's too..but definitely not '76. Probably just a stroke of luck depending on how revolutionary the musical year. I guess someone who turned 14 in '64 with the British invasion and the changing American musical styles to modern rock, would respond with a resounding yes

I'm impressed with the answers and thoughts - very interesting points/counterpoints made! Sweet comments on "Criminal Minds" - nice to see something "outside" the board.
