"Let's Wait Awhile" sneaked up to #2 in March 1987, but didn't hit #1. That song was kept out of #1 by Club Nouveau's upbeat remake of "Lean On Me".
It's pure coincidence that most of Janet Jackson's ballads peaked at #2.
"Again" being another one of those Janet Jackson ballads. Peaked at #2 in November 1993, kept out of #1 by "All That She Wants" by Ace of Base.
"If" by Janet Jackson (not a ballad) went to #2, and was kept out of #1 by Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" in September or October 1993.

I always thought that band was just called "Cyrkle". Is there an authoritative citation for "The"?

"Manic Monday" by The Bangles was #2 in the spring of 1986, and was kept out of #1 by the singer who wrote "Manic Monday", Prince, with his band The Revolution and their hit "Kiss". At least that was what I learned in a trivia game some time ago on Second Life.

Talk about coincidences relating to "Let's Wait A While,"--the first five singles from Control all peaked at positions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5--but not in the order of release. "What Have You Done for Me Lately" #4, "Nasty" #3, "When I Think of You" #1, "Control" #5, and "Let's Wait A While" #2

Two Jim Steinman songs in the Top 2 positions in October 1983, with "Total Eclipse of the Heart" keeping the other JS production "Making Love Out of Nothing At All" at #2.

Neal, that's where I learned my last two posts--the 5 songs from Control and The Top 2 with Jim Steinman!!! But....after all these years to remember this and share with others....don't we get some credit

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a "famous" #2 exactly, but back in the day I was a big Wang Chung fan and I closely followed "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" all the way up to... #2. I'm still disappointed about that even today. At #1 was The Bangles with "Walk Like An Egyptian."

A recent example:
"Get Lucky" by Daft Punk/Pharrell - #2 for 5 weeks on the Hot 100 (kept out of #1 by "Blurred Lines")

From the Hot 100, "Gangnam Style" spent seven weeks at #2 behind Maroon 5's "One More Night."
