Over the years I have done nothing but gripe about him as a guest host. Those who have been on this board or were in chats since 2002 may remember. I was very outspoken about how I would immediately get angry in the mid 90s when I woke up to hear him filling in for Casey Kasem. I thought he was slow, personalityless, and downright awful. However, in a case of absence making the heart grow fonder or not knowing what I had til it was gone, someone on this board sent me a copy of a show from 1996 in which he guest hosted. I thought he was great! He certainly beats 99% of the current DJ's I've heard in the last several years. Here's to David Perry! I am sorry I never realized your talent until long after you left the airwaves.

David Perry: "I'm Casey Kasem."
Since Paul has started this thread, perhaps someone can provide the program date of when he guested hosted and forgot who he was. Yes, this actually happened.

Yeah I know. I was trying to sweep that under the rug and not mention it. It happened sometime in 1994 I believe. Ironically, I'd mistake him for Casey Kasem faster than I would the current AT40 host or again....99% of the DJs on the air now.

Hope that I am remembering this correctly...Was it David Perry or one of Casey's other guest hosts?
Casey read a letter on the show (can't remember if it was CT40 or one of Casey's later shows) from a fan complaining about the guest host and how the fan hated and got angry every time that he or she woke up to hear the guest host filling in for Casey.

Someone complained and it was read on air?! FYI, it was not me complaining about Perry.

Yes, I vaguely recall that "complaint letter" being read as an R&D. And wasn't there an R&D where the writer dedicated a song to Casey that was read by a CT40 guest host at some point? As for David Perry, I still think he sounded awful. But absence made the heart grow fonder for me in terms of Mark Elliot. Always thought he was terrible until Perry came along to replace him as the "regular." And to this day, I still occasionally pop on a show Mark did. Haven't listened to a David Perry show since they were originally aired. Though I might pull out the 7/23/94 show one of these days...

David Perry vs this weeks AT40 host.
If you remember those old Tyson fights of first round KO's in 90 seconds. That's how this competition went.

I never minded Perry, though I thought Mark Elliott was much better.
The funny thing about Paul's assessment is his always describing Perry as "slow" when I felt he had the exact opposite problem. He seemed to rush through the script and not slow down to emphasize anything, so he came across as not really caring about what he was reading.
Of course, I found out later on from reading Rob's book that he was TOLD to do it this way by the directors/producers so you couldn't really blame him for it.
Anyway, it was great on my recent visit to Disney World in Florida to hear Mark Elliott's voice all over the place, mostly on buses telling me where I was going and if I was standing to hold on to the hand rail! ;D

I just got a copy of 7/23/94. Does anyone know between what songs I can find "I'm Casey Kasem"?

I found it. It's during the intro to #14, "Wild Night"
