This morning I received the information that Mark Hollis, singer of the British band Talk Talk, had passed away at the age of 64. Mark Hollis, born 1955 in Tottenham, was actually a child psychologist. Talk Talk was his band with bassist Paul Webb, drummer Lee Harris and keyboarder Simon Brenner, soon replaced by Tim Friese-Green. In 1981 the band signed a contract with the record company EMI, who sold Talk Talk as sugared synthiepop and the musicians as little brothers of Duran Duran. "It´s My Life" from 1984 surprises with first steps towards World Music and Field Recordings and "Such A Shame" starts with a loop of trumpeting elephants. But soon Talk Talk turns into another direction, "Life´s What You Make It": Piano and rhythm, out of the pop charts, and when the band disappeared into the studio for 14 months, at a time when studio work was still so expensive to finally present "The Spirit of Eden", it was over with fame and honor. A glance at the instrumentation alone shows that Mark Hollis had to have something very different in mind than a few lovely melodies: bassoon, oboe, two double basses - and the Chelmsford Cathedral Choir on top of that. The record company was sitting on a mountain of expenses, and hardly anyone wanted to listen to this album. For a few insiders this record is the real legacy of Mark Hollis, a wonder world of music. Because Hollis sings about heroin in the song "I Believe in You", many thought that this was the answer to the question of what was really bothering this man, but it wasn´t his own addiction that was at stake here, but that of his brother. Here´s the biggest hit of Talk Talk in Austria - #2 in 1984 - "Such A Shame":

Premiere optional extras for 3/1/86 in 2015 were: "So Far Away" Dire Straits "West End Girls" Pet Shop Boys "Where Are You Now?" Synch "Addicted To Love" Robert Palmer I think that there is a good chance that "Where Are You Now?" will be replaced by "That Was Then, This Is Now". You are right again. Confirmed optional extras: Hour #1: "So Far Away" - Dire Straits Hour #2: "West End Girls" - Pet Shop Boys Hour #3: "That Was Then, This Is Now" - The Monkees Hour #4: "Addicted To Love" - Robert Palmer "Where Are You Now?" was also used as an OE during the 4/5/86 show in 2011. Doesn't break my heart to see that one replaced--not a fan of that song. The Monkees cut is a little early in the year for when that song came out (didn't hit the top 40 until 8/2/86), but makes sense for Premiere to play it.

Sad to hear of the loss of Mark Hollis. I love his warm, expressive vocals, what little of them we had the chance to hear. Of course, Talk Talk had just the one top-40 record here in the States, one that should have charted a whole lot higher than #31. At the time I felt it was one of the better songs out there, but only one of the five top-40 stations in Milwaukee ever played it. RIP.

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess - 3/5/83 2nd Guess - 3/9/85
Almost has to be 1983 next week, and it could be either this show or 3/12/83. I'll lean toward 3/5/83 since it's been longer since that show last aired. The 2nd guess is mostly a formality.

Is there a station that plays the '80's show on Thursday evenings? I thought some of you have made reference to listening to AT40 the 80's on Thursdays.

No, that is WSQL ('White Squirrel Radio'), Brevard NC, who is running the 1974 show right now. They are the only AT40 affiliate, either '70s or '80s, that runs the show on Thursday. The earliest '80s airing is Firday at 1PM Central, WWIS Black River Falls WI.

It's either the B show from the PREVIOUS weekend or a randomly selected show from around that time. People on here are saying it is the B show from the previous weekend when there is one but every time I've listened it's been a random show from their vault.

Next week 3/5/83! www.charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/03-05-83.pdfLast played 2014 w/extras Hour #1: "It Might Be You" - Stephen Bishop Hour #2: "Beat It" - Michael Jackson Hour #3: "Change Of Heart" - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Hour #4: "Love My Way" - Psychedelic Furs That was the second time it was aired; the first of course was all the way back in April 2007, as the debut installment in Premiere's 1980s AT40 series, even though it was a month after the show's placement in the year. (At around the same time, February 2007, Premiere's first group of 1970s AT40 affiliates aired a September 1974 countdown.)

Odd that, of those extras, only one was a Top 20 hit (in fact, it was a #1).

"The biggest mover within the countdown this week rockets from #40 to #29 - 11 notches. It´s a song that pays homage to a composer who did his work back in the 18th century. And he´ll probably never be off the Billboard Classical Chart. With a tribute to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart here´s Falco with "Rock Me Amadeus":" On 3/18/1994 the Austrian Post issued a stamp in honor of Falco as part of its special "Austro Pop" series: This was followed in 2006 by the special postage stamp "Falco - Rock Me Amadeus": And on 1/19/2017 the Austrian Post once again issued a special postage stamp to mark Falco´s 60th birthday. It shows the cover of the album "Falco 60": Now, you know "Amadeus" and "Mozart", you know "Silent Night" and "Sound Of Music" and (maybe) you know "apple strudel" and "Wiener schnitzel", but here are more (maybe surprising) facts about Austria:

And three of THOSE songs didn't even hit the Top 40!
