All very good years in music... Well, I wasn't around in 1970 but still...lol Heres hoping 2015 follows the course.. It will if you're Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, Ariana Grande, and Ed Sheeran fans. I think the song of this year has already been crowned in "Uptown Funk!" As far as Taylor, Maroon & Ariana go I can blow better sounds out my rear. We're all entitled to our own opinion but surely these 2015 charts are far superior to the charts exactly 10 years ago in 2005 that were dominated by the likes of 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Lil Jon, and Frankie J. I couldn't even listen to the weekly countdowns that year. I was only into the classics then.. It's probably nothing more than just coincidence but it seems like to me at least, music went downhill once Casey stopped doing AT40 in January 2004.

If you don't like rap/hip hop, then music was in a slump before the change in AT40 hosts. I was looking at the 2002-03 charts and Casey had to count down a lot of songs by artists including and similar to those you listed. I think rap and hip hop were strongest at CHR from about 2002-05. Personally I don't mind that kind of music, but I think there was some oversaturation of it then.

I have no problem with those in fact from 2005 I'd rather listen to 50, Snoop & Lil Jon (I don't know where Frankie J come up he was a 2 hit wonder at best) My problem with the Hot 100 now is unless you're a "pop" rap like Pitbull or appeal to teen & mostly white teen girls who download you like Taylor Swift. Today's rap & "real" R&B are lucky to hit Top 5 on the Hot 100 because it is so messed up including things like youtube views. Just imagine if youtube would've been around & Billboard included them in the late 80's every New Kids On The Block song would've probably had 5 or 6 weeks at #1 based on youtube views alone.

This week sees something done regularly in the 70s shows (including this week) - but here in the 80s shows, it's been much more rare.
As 80sat40fan alluded to, one of the original Extras is indeed demoted to optional (fortunately, it's not one of the Archives). I wasn't told sooner that this would be the case with this show, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to give that hint for guessing extras (i.e. It might be that I don't find out until I find out all the extras on a given week).
In any case, the best guesser (freakyflybry this week) only guessed 2 out of 4, and the three non-original extras were all guessed.
This week's Extras are:
"Stomp!" - The Brothers Johnson "Train In Vain" - The Clash "What I Like About You" - The Romantics "I Can See For Miles" - The Who (original AT40 extra)

#1 soul, #1 disco, sold a million copies. That would get you a top 10 hit in the mid to late 70s. But by the early 80s, all bets were off. At #35 in this week's show and also in the show from exactly a year later were two such songs that both peaked at 19...."And the Beat Goes On" and "Don't Stop the Music".
Back to listening to the show now and for the second straight week, a show features a Bob Seger summer song in the winter or early spring. Last week it was "Night Moves" in the 70s show and this week it is "Fire Lake". 3 albums released by him from 1977-80 and the first and third were released in the winter but featured summer songs as the leadoff singles. Whereas the second album WAS released in the summer (of 1978) but did not feature a summer song as the leadoff single (Still the Same).
Casey makes a slight mistake when he says that 'last year Teri DeSario recorded an album produced by Barry Gibb'. Last year would be 1979 but it was in 1978 that it happened. She almost made the top 40 as a result with "Ain't Gonna Keep Me From You" reaching #43. How strange that Barry Gibb was associated in 1978 with something that did not make the top 10 much less the top 40.

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess: 3/30/85 2nd Guess: 3/26/83
Guessing that 1981 waits until the 4/18/81 show, but I wouldn't be shocked if they played it next weekend either...

Lovin' this 1980 show. There was still disco, without being beat over the head with it like 9 months prior, legacy acts, AC, Urban Cowboy country, R&B, rock, new wave, lite rock, movie music, and instrumental. Can you imagine that kinda variety on radio today? Me too! Take that, 1980 haters!

Nice to see they updated the comments on the extras but sorry to inform Larry that 5 Seconds Of Summer's remake of "What I like About You" besides sucking failed to be a bigger hit than the Romantics version (unless you were a teen girl that don't know it's even a remake).

The 5 seconds version was bigger if you're comparing the Hot 100 in 1980 to the Mediabase/mainstream top 40/AT40 charts in 2015, which (in terms of pop radio airplay) could be considered a reasonable comparison.
