You know you can order shows from Shannon Lynn via the Charis website right? That would effectively be a solution you'd be looking for, and all it would cost is that small/modest fee per show that you spoke of.

I don't think any of the music shows owned by Premiere or most any other national entity are available for download. It cuts into affiliate listenershipmand and there's the music clearance issue also. It's one thing when on the radio or streaming online, another entirely when you start downloading them.

Yes - I will guess that it would not be considered good for business to allow the shows to be downloaded for free. Unless they could somehow insert ads throughout those shows that couldn't be omitted (kind of like those stinkin' DVDs that force you to play the ads instead of going straight to the main menu--man I HATE those...)
As stated above however, Shannon Lynn on Charis Music is your guy if you want to purchase shows (and I think has darned near all of them).

Even the radio show the ITunes Rewind had a podcast but all the music was edited out of it. I wouldn't be interested in any radio countdown show podcast like that.

If they were available, they would probably be the Premeire version with edits. Shannon has the original shows. He charges around $20 a pop, not exactly a "small fee," but they are complete and uncut and on CD.

And...the ones from Shannon have the original network commercials, which you won't hear otherwise, and can be kind of a fun listen.

Personally, I like the original program discs. Be it vinyl or CD, and complete with cues being it the network on the international cue versions (which i've yet to see on shannon's site)
I'm not a super dedicated fan, but with the airing of AT40 (both classics and current) in my city, it's renewed my interest in the show again, and am glad I kept my collection of original discs (and glad I bought my 70s shows in the 80s when they were reasonably priced)
I just bought a few more shows from a ex radio station employee who worked at an affiliate for a very nice price.
Half the fun is having the original discs. digital and CD's in general can have finite life span, but vinyl is here to stay.

Glad this question was raised, I didn't know I could order the shows from Shannon. Does think include all classic AT40 shows, or the just the ones they have re-aired so far? There were a few I missed when I was out of town and not within recieving distance of an affiliate, no wifi access at the time. Thanks again.

From what Shannon has told me, every AT40 show is available at $20 per show. His e-mail is shannon@charismusicgroup.com. The 3-hour shows fit on 2 disks, while the 4-hours fit on 3 disks.

The only thing is, where is August 25, 1984 on Shannon's list? The link to the PDF sheets for that date are not enabled yet.

I have bought some original LP's of AT40 and CT40 off of Shannon over the years. He is always a pleasure to do business with, and the remastered CD's come complete with show promos, and any other content from the original vinyl (such as theme beds, etc). And although his LP's on eBay can wind up being pricey, if there is a particular show you are willing to spend some money on, every LP set I have bought off of him is always in immaculate condition.

Regardless of whether there's a cue sheet or not, Shannon may have the show-contact him and see. According to the list on this site, Aug 25 1984 (listed there as Aug 27 1984) was played as part of the Flashback series in 2001

And although his LP's on eBay can wind up being pricey, if there is a particular show you are willing to spend some money on, every LP set I have bought off of him is always in immaculate condition. I've bought or obtained program discs from a variety of sources, and in the majority of cases, the discs are in excellent condition. These things are lucky to be played once or twice and then tossed in the trash or usually grabbed by station employees, given away as listener prizes or sold for charity by the local station. I just got the top 40 of 1988 from a former station employee, all 7 hours for an amazing price complete with cues. Shannon's transfers are very acceptable, but only he can do so much from AT40 program discs. Groove distortion especially on segments 3 and 6, on the inner most grooves can get "fussy" sounding. This is the product of inner groove distortion, and results when you try to cram 24-25 mins of audio into a medium that usually should hold no more then 20 mins for high quality. It's very noticable on air when you have a radio station that's heavily processed, but you know, most listeners won't have a clue as I have a more educated ear. Very little you can do with groove distortion and given the nostalgia factor of the show, and FM radio can cover up a multitude of flaws in source material, no PD will care. One thing WW One did with CT 40 was spread it over 6 vinyl discs instead of 4. besides the format change of rolling over the top of the hour, the quality went up with louder grooves and less inner groove distortion because less was crammed in one side. Far easier to get a higher quality transfer.

Yes--that is only because the original cue sheet was probably not available. There are a number of shows that have been played so far on the Premiere series (thus obviously remastered by Shannon), for which there was not an available cue sheet. Recent airings that comes to mind include 10/18/80, 10/22/83, 6/23/84, 10/13/84, 8/2/86 among others.

Are we any closer to this? It would be nice to be able to download an official copy of AT40 for a nominal fee. When this question was first asked, I see why at that time it might not have been possible. Most shows were unaired or not yet remastered. Now those that fall into those categories are minimal. You can still hold off on making unaired shows available until after they have been played by the affiliates. But for the rest of the shows, especially the guest hosted ones that may never air terrestrially, this would be a convenient, legal option to the alternative.
