Stations mentioned on last week's 70s show (5/21/1977): - WMET, Chicago - They are now known as WNUA with a Spanish Pop format; the call letters now belong to a religious (Catholic) station in Washington DC. Their time as a Top 40 station was short-lived (from 12/1/1976 to sometime in 1978).
(Fun Fact #1: Bob Newhart owned this station for a couple of years in the mid-late '60s)
- WTTX, Appomattox, VA - The FM is currently a Southern gospel/contemporary Christian station; the AM (later known as WOWZ) is now silent.
- WABB, Mobile, AL - mentioned on the following shows: 4/18/1987, 1/23/1988 and 5/12/1990
- WINA, Charlottesville, VA - currently a news/talk/sports station
- KYA, San Francisco, CA - The FM is now KRZZ with a Mexican regional station and the AM is now KSFB with a Roman Catholic station. The AM version is where Casey worked as a DJ in the early '60s.
Here's some links of interest if you haven't seen them before:
WPGC People: Casey Kasem
KYA Radio
KYA Radio 1260: The Top 40 Collection (see "1981" for a clip of the tail end of an AT40 episode from 5/31/1981)
- KTLO, Mountain Home, AR - On The Radio says that the AM is a country station and the FM has a nostalgia format.
- KACY, Oxnard, CA - The KACY call letters were used at this station until 1984 when they flipped to a Spanish-language format and changed their call letters to KTRO. In 1999, they changed their call letters to KVTA and are currently a news/talk station; the KACY letters now belong to a classic hits station in Arkansas City, Kansas (owned by Tornado Alley Communications).
(Fun Fact #2: Bob Eubanks got his start at this station.)
One new station was welcomed into the AT40 family: - KBDF, Eugene, OR - I'm pretty sure this is station now known as KRVM (AM); they are a news/information station.

Whatever happened to...? (May 19, 1984) - WUFF Eastman, GA - An AM/FM combo, and both are Country today, except on Sundays, when they're Gospel. The FM moved from 97.5 to 92.1 in 1992.
They were also mentioned on 4/8/1978.

I'll do the Michigan stations: WHYT Detroit - Now a Hot AC station using the WDVD calls, as was first mentioned here. Rock 95 (WRNF? That's what Wiki tells me anyway. Call sign history is a little sketchy) Muskegon, MI - Donated to nearby Grand Valley State University in the mid-to-late 90's and is now an NPR station. Calls are now WGVS.

Stations mentioned on the 5/29/1971 countdown: - KBYR, Anchorage, AK - They are now a Talk station with the branding "Smart Radio 700".
- WORJ, Orlando, FL - This station had the WORJ call letters until 1981 when they changed them to WJYO-FM (as well as becoming a soft AC station). In 1990, they changed once again to the call letters they have to this day: WMGF. Currently, they are an AC station.
- WNRI, Woonsocket, RI - now a news/talk station
- KINT, El Paso, TX - The KINT call letters existed on this station until 5/7/1979 when they were changed to KKOL; those lasted until the early 80s when it changed to the current KELP. Currently, they are a Christian radio station.
- KQEO, Albuquerque, NM - They were also mentioned a couple weeks back on 5/6/1972. Since no one's found info for it yet, here it is:
They are now a Lifetalk Radio affiliate with the call letters KSVA. The KQEO call letters now belong to a classic hits station in Idaho Falls, ID. The Wiki link has this about the old KQEO:
Three new stations welcomed to the family: - WBLU, Salem, VA - This station is now WTOY, an Urban Contemporary/Black Gospel station. Here's a link I found about WLBU's history while looking on Google.
As for the WBLU call letters, they now belong to an NPR affiliate in Grand Rapids, MI.
- WKEE, Huntingdon, WV - this is the sixth time this station's been mentioned since this thread was started; the other times are: 5/11/1974, 2/10/1979, 2/23/1980, 12/4/1982 and 1/14/1984
- WJRI, Lenoir, NC - They are now a news/talk station; also mentioned on 5/11/1974 and 5/14/1988.

“in 50 states and around the world on great radio stations like…” I recently joined the board so I don’t know if this is the exact thread. But does anybody know what was the 50th and the very last state that added the original AT40 during the 1970s. Also I was always curious to know what the first overseas station was that carried the show (excluding of course the forces radio in May 1971. rayshae3, I believe the state you're looking for is Vermont where AT40 wasn't heard until 1974. And the first station to draw an overseas audience, in early 1971, was in Port-o-Spain, Trinidad. Just about that same time the show began on a couple of Canadian stations. Hope that information is helpful.

Mentioned on the 3/25/1972 and 4/19/1975 shows. It's worth noting, then, that this week's mention could have been their last, due to the impending flip to Oldies later in the year.

By the time the 10/4/86 show had aired,WDRC had already switched to an oldies/greatest hits format which it still has today.

Phew. I've had a lot less time to do this than I thought I would, but...what I'm posting below are the stations from 5/31/86, from the regular countdown of 5/28/88, and since I have the 5/24/86 show from last year to go with 5/31...that one, too. Here we go: Whatever happened to...? (May 24, 1986) - WNOK Columbia, SC - Heard in the subsequent two years - 4/18/87 and 2/6/88.
- WMEE Fort Wayne, IN - Heard earlier on 4/28/79, 4/26/80, and 4/7/84.
- 1250 AM Mccomb, MS - Thanks to Google for locating a page with Mississippi information on it. This one, WHNY, is now a Sports station.
- WKLA West Michigan's Own K106 Ludington, MI - Heard just two weeks ago on 5/19/84.
- The Music FM Isle 95 WJKC The Virgin Islands - Now an Urban/Hip Hop/Reggae station. It appears that they left the family at some point, perhaps not long after Shadoe began hosting, for they'd re-join the family later in that era, on 1/12/91.
- WFXX South Williamsport, PA - Yep, this is "The Fox" from 3/12/88. They flipped to WZXR in September 1991.
- Hit Radio K105 Coos Bay, OR - I think this is KYNG. Given the "K105" branding, my guess is they were at 105.5 at this time, but would move to 106.5 later, at least in time for 1991 (they're also mentioned on 1/12/91). Now KYSJ at 105.9, they're a "New AC"/Smooth Jazz station. What exactly is a "New AC" station, anyway??
- All-Hit 97.1 KEGL Arlington & Dallas, TX - Erm, yeah...we've heard this one several times already.
- WHSY Hattiesburg, MS - Now WXRR, a Classic Rocker. Apparently WHSY had changed to some kind of Rock format prior to the April 1, 1995 launch of WXRR, however.
- 1230 WCRO Johnstown, PA - Having had these letters since signing on in September 1947 and never having an FM partner, it was around this time that they became an AC station. These days, their format hasn't gone too far from that, now being a "Music of Your Life" station.
New to the American Top 40 family this week: - KEZB B94 El Paso, TX - Now KINT, "Jose FM", Spanish Adult Hits. Strangely, KINT's page doesn't even give history beyond its March 18, 1994 sign in date.
- 96X WCJX Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-The Palm Beaches, FL - Hmmm. Either Miami had two affiliates, or Y100 let their contract run out for a time. Even more interesting is the fact that they changed owners from Wodlinger Broadcasting to Beasley-Reed Broadcasting this very month - I have to think that played a part in the station getting the show! And, roughly two months later at 7 AM on August 4, they flipped from their mainstream CHR format to WPOW, a Dance Top 40 format - which they more-or-less still are. Given the way formats have evolved, however, that would make them Rhythmic. This might be the only time WCJX was mentioned as an affiliate - this station would be heard again later, only as WPOW. But given that Y100 would be heard again by 1989 (5/6 to be exact)...I wonder if WPOW's run with the show was only for those couple of years?
Whatever happened to...? (May 31, 1986) - 96 WHYT Detroit, MI - Heard four months ago on 1/18.
- KIEZ Beaumont, TX - Oh, now this one's just funny. Had to Google this one to find anything, and...for starters, according to an FCC filing, this station had flipped to KWIC two weeks prior to this show on May 16! There's really no way to trace their full history, but I can tell you this: In 2007, the station, now known as KRCM, had their request to move from Beaumont to Shenandoah approved. They spent the next few years testing the airwaves, but appear to have settled on a Spanish Christian format, as of this past March. Their recent info all comes courtesy of searches on the radio-info boards.
- Q101 Meridian, MS - WJDQ from 3/19/83.
- KSGT Jackson Hole, WY - Now Country.
- KVOK/KJJZ Kodiak, AK - KVOK was heard the previous year on 5/11. KJJZ, is now KRXX. They had a "Jack" format at some point (as given by a previous logo), but they're once again a Top 40 today.
- DRC FM 103 Hartford, CT - WDRC, given above.
- WAIN FM Columbia, KY - A contemporary country station doing airing the show in 1986?? Believe it or not, that's what they were. It's still around today...but what its format is, I have no idea.
- Stereo 94 KOPR Butte, MT - Now an Adult Hits station.
- WNMB North Myrtle Beach, SC - At different times, this existed as an AM/FM combo, playing a mix of Oldies and AC (yet still carrying the show). The FM flipped to Hot AC in 1997, then went back to AC in 1999, then changed calls to WEZV in 2000. Over the next few years, they evolved into more of an Adult Standards station, which they essentially still are today. The AM assumed the moniker of what the FM had been, and is now an Oldies/Beach station today with the WNMB letters.
- KCRV 1370 AM Carruthersville, MO - Now Country.
- Music Country KWVR Enterprise, OR - A Full Service, Country-based station carrying the show? Believe it or not, that's what they were - and still are, today! (Though obviously not with the show today...)
New to the American Top 40 family this week: - U102 WXYU Lynchburg, VA - Still an affiliate on 3/12/88.
- WRNF Rock 95 Muskegon, MI - Given above.
Whatever happened to...? (May 28, 1988) - 92 Pro FM Providence, RI - Heard since 12/22/79, and into the 90s (5/12/90).
- FM 100 Means Music, WMC-FM Memphis, TN - An affiliate since at least 3/19/83.
- Super Q 96-FM & 76 AM San Antonio, TX - Heard two months before on 3/12.
- KTKU Juneau, AK - The first commercial FM station to sign on in Juneau, in 1984, its first General Manager was current State Senator Dennis Egan. These days, they're Country.
- WBVI 96-7 Findlay, OH - Having only been WBVI since July 6 of the previous year (WFOB before that), they were a Soft AC station carrying the show. In the Fall of 1996, however, they first lost the Soft from their AC, before eventually transitioning to adding Hot in its place, which they still have today.
- KQ106 Kearney, NE - KQKY, still a Top 40 today. They do not appear to have the current AT40, however.
- 93Q KKBQ-FM Houston, TX - Heard back on 1/25/86.
- 97 KDOG Mankato, MN - They'd go Modern AC in May 1999, then Hot AC in August 2002, then Adult Hits in 2006...before finally going back to CHR on September 4, 2009.
- "Quixie" WQXE Radcliff/Elizabethtown, KY - Heard the previous year on 2/21, and the following year on 5/6.
- Power Hits 98 PXY Rochester, NY - WPXY (of course). Despite having been a Top 40 since 1983, they must have only picked up the show (or picked it back up) sometime the year before, as the former WMJQ had it previously, or at least they did on 12/13/86. Oddly enough, that station in its current form as WBEE is a sister to WPXY today, whose countdown of choice is Hollywood Hamilton's Weekend Top 30.
- CKCO Chatham, Ontario, Canada - Actually really a Casey error; it's CFCO from 2/21/87.
- 101 KDWB Minneapolis-St. Paul - Heard on 11/1/86, 3/12/88, and 4/8/89.
- Q105 Portland, OR - KXYQ. They'd had those call letters since 1986, but were Top 40 since 1978. At one point before 1995, they changed to AC (no time given, so they could've been already) - 1995 was when they flipped to Classic Rock as KKRH. Then, three years later, they changed to their current KRSK, a Hot AC. That more-or-less is still their format today, but over the past year they've been adding some more pop to their playlist (a mark more of Adult Top 40 than of Hot AC).
- WRPC Mayaguez, Puerto Rico - Now WEGM, a CHR/Rhythmic. Casey gives their location as Mayaguez, but even the 1988 Radio Archives yearbook refers to their current location of San German.
Phew...and there you have it!

Whatever happened to...? (May 28, 1988) - 92 Pro FM Providence, RI - Heard since 12/22/79, and into the 90s (5/12/90).
One thing about them I found one their old tv commercials on youtube. Guess what show they advertised on it.

KINT-AM/El Paso was a legendary top 40 station back in the late 1970s under the brilliant Jhani Kaye, who essentially reinvented the AC format in 1982 at KOST/Los Angeles, only a handful of months after Gerry DeFrancesco reinvented the top 40 format at crosstown KIIS-FM with Rick Dees in morning drive.
The eighties were a monster decade for both formats and especially top 40, after both had aimlessly meandered through the seventies.
