The Uncle Sam style hat logo dates all the way back to 1970, and was used for twelve years, judging from the cue sheets. It was replaced in 1982 by an updated logo that simply read "AMERICAN TOP 40", on two lines with stars on either side of "TOP 40", with "WITH CASEY KASEM" in smaller letters. In 1988 they substituted Shadoe's name, and it stayed that way until the end of Shadoe's run.

The original AT40 logo sounds like it was perfect for the series premiere, seeing it debuted on the 4th of July weekend in 1970. Such a fitting occasion.

We can probably assume that the change in the logo in 1982 had to do with the ABC-Watermark merger. I'm guessing the suits at ABC decided they needed to update things...and probably one of the first of many ways they effed up things with the show.

Come to think of it, in the original logo, does the "4" resemble Uncle Sam's nose and chin as if it faces to the left?
I actually remember first seeing the AT40 logo in an OZ-FM advertisement in The Newfoundland Herald's TV Listings as early as 1982. OZ-FM's advertisement could have carried over the original AT40 logo a bit beyond 1982, but when logos get updated, the outdated version is not supposed to exist any longer.
Normally, when businesses update logos, it's possible that they start phasing in the updated logos on their signs, their stationery, and whatever. Royal Bank in Canada (now known simply as RBC) had the same logo since the 1970s (the one with the lion breathing fire, facing to the left), and didn't update their logo until 2001 (the one with the lion facing in the opposite direction and now being known as RBC). The old logo stayed in tact on many Royal Bank-related stuff until late in 2002 or earliest 2003. I know that the sign in front of a branch changed to the 2001 version by December 2002, and the phasing-in of the updated logo was nearly completed by the end of 2002, at the earliest.
Same might be true with AT40. Some radio stations continued using the old logo in their published ads until 1983 or maybe even 1984. I didn't notice the updated logo until after Shadoe Stevens took over the announcing duties.
It's quite creepy how McDonald's used the same golden arches logo for the entire time they existed.

The four corner stars were removed from the Uncle Sam logo in 1980, which was the beginning of the end of that iconic symbol. The U.S. logo was permanently discontinued in 1982, to the objection of both Casey and Don Bustany.

But why take it out? Was that what ABC wanted?

I don't recall what the AT40 logo was during Casey's 1998-2003 run. I'm assuming that the current design, with "AT40" in an oval with a star in the "0", was introduced for or during the Seacrest years.

I checked out the all the logos from both runs, and I was surprised the original AT40 logo was more rounded characters.
It looks as if the Uncle Sam style hat logo didn't debut until around 1975 prior to the U.S. bicentennial year (such a fitting occasion).
If I could update the poll, I could. But I may not be able to.
