12/8/73 was aired in 2014, the only time it's been played before now. The optional extras then were: Hour #1: "Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" - Aretha Franklin Hour #2: "Let Me Be There" - Olivia Newton-John Hour #3: "Ramblin' Man" - Allman Brothers Band "Ramblin' Man" was a bit of a curveball as it dropped out of the top 40 that week. The intros to the extras then were put together from old Casey clips, which lately we haven't heard for countdowns that far into the decade (mostly 1970-71 have used recycled or reconstructed Casey intros recently, especially when the extras are songs heard in the original shows.) I'll bet "Ramblin' Man" is replaced by a different extra, as Premiere no longer seems to choose songs that had just fallen out of the 40 as extras. The other two seem like solid choices, especially given Aretha's recent passing. That said, I'll guess "Spiders and Snakes" by Jim Stafford as the 'new' third extra. An outside possibility would be "Jungle Boogie" by Kool and the Gang. That song debuted on the 'Hot 100' at #100 on this week and was one of those rare songs to go from the very bottom of the chart all the way into the top 10 (#4).

Hoggy aside, I'm going to guess that the last two shows of the year are 12/17/77 (never played by Premiere) and 12/20/75 (last done in 2011.) Thought process of elimination: it's been said on here no more 1971 or four hour 70s shows (1978-79) this year. 1972 and 1973 are of course done in the first two weekends of December, and 1970 and 1976 were just played in the last month, and mid-to-late December shows from those years were aired in just the last two years. The only other countdown I can think of that doesn't have any of these issues is 12/14/74, which could be played the weekend of Dec. 15-16, but why play that when there's a show that's never been aired from a year that hasn't been featured since mid-September? That would hardly be the first time that something like that happened, though. You did, however, forget one of the "process of elimination" factors. About a month ago, Scott Lakefield posted that, during the last two months of this year (not counting the first week, which was already posted before he told us), one show from all but one of the years 1970-1977 would be featured once leading up to the year-ender (which would also be from one of those years). 1971 would be the odd year out, so it would have to be 1975 and 1977. 1974 was already done in mid-November. I'm thinking that it one of the years that will be played in January.

Thank you. Here’s the thing for whomever posts what the next show is going to be: If a show is a re-airing of a Larry Morgan-introed and the extras aren’t changing from the last airing ... ... JUST SAY SO!!!!! It’ll have saved me time and once again me looking silly. FWIW: Had Aretha not been part of this group of extras, I might still have predicted “Until You Come Back To Me” replace one of those songs as a posthumous tribute. Brian

Brian I see his point... if extras won't change, no need to wait to reveal them, once the show is available to affiliates... dL

The year ender of 1977 was last year, I am still hoping for 1972 as the year ender. I'll bet it is. The fact that a 1971 show has not been offered since October is another indication that it probably will be 1972 at year end.

Kind of an offbeat Fifth Dimension intro on 12/2/72 - Casey calls them "a group that used to be called the Versatiles, and they still are." I figured out quickly that he meant that they were versatile, but for a second I thought he meant they were still called the Versatiles.

I knew 1977 was done last year - I was just saying what weekly shows are theoretically coming up later this month. It will probably be 1977 the weekend of December 15-16, 1975 the weekend of December 22-23, and the 1972 year-end over the two weeks after that. Not sure what weeks, but I'm predicting that 1971 and 1974 will be played sometime in January.

Even a December '72 show with a lot of '73 hits on it? Not doubting you, just guessing that there will be fewer 'no-plays' for this one than for the '70 show a couple of weeks ago. As expected Hoggy providing great alternative programming, this week 12/6/75!! 69.8.162.164:8000/hog.aac.m3uWhen do they air the show? Yes I'm too lazy to look through the station listing............. EDITED to add...never mind....looked it up and saw 1 pm Sundays. But thanks for the info about "The Hog"..........I added them to my WinAmp playlist.

^For those who need to know: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunday 1 pm - 4 pm WIHG - The Hog - Crossville TN 105.7 FM Does NOT play optional extras. Has news updates at the top of each hour. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The last time there was a 1973 A show in August, WIHG aired a three-hour 1979 episode. I would expect to hear last year's 12/8/79 three-hour show on the Hog, Sunday.

The interesting part of WIHG - the Hog's - decision not to play the early 70's shows - is they play 60's, 70's and 80's classic Rock. I listen fairly often. Of the 3-4 classic Pop/Rock stations in this area - they play by far more 60's and early 70's songs than any of the others.
Their recently played (last 50) songs include - Immigrant Song (1970), Family Affair (1971), Brother Louie (1973), Knocking on Heaven's Door (1973), It's Too Late (1971) and School's Out (1972).

Those songs just don't get played on terrestrial radio, period. What a cool station for a scenic drive down I-40. It's too bad more people don't get that chance. On the signal coverage map for WIHG, the next major city, Knoxville, is just barely on the outer fringe. At least the FCC had the presence of mind to choose a city of license with "rock" in its name. Here's the link to that map: radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WIHG&service=FM

"Be" by Neil Diamond appears on the countdown from 12/8/73-That was on the soundtrack of the movie "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" which was a resounding flop at the box office-However,"Be" is an overlooked gem by Mr.Diamond.

Yes, the film flopped and the single also got a tepid reception by Diamond's standards at the time, only reaching #34. The soundtrack album was very successful though.
