Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess - 5/19/79 2nd Guess - 5/22/76
The longest drought currently goes to 1978, but the next two after that are '76 and '79. If it's 1979, it would be a repeat airing for this show (2011), but the first time it will have been offered with all four hours. 5/22/76 has been played twice, but not since 2010.

Premiere offered four different shows last week. That means there were four #2 songs: I Gotcha Right Back Where We Started From Ride Like The Wind Looking For A New Love
None of them went to #1.

For 5/19/79, I'll go with:
"Gold" "Ring My Bell" "I Want You To Want Me" "Shine A Little Love"

Premiere optional extras for 5/15/71 back in 2015 were: Hour #1: "Mother In Law" Ernie K-Doe (original AT40 extra) Hour #2: "I Almost Lost My Mind" Pat Boone (original AT40 extra) Hour #3: "Stand By Me" Ben E. King (Tribute)
I'll go with "Rainy Days And Mondays" to replace "Stand By Me".
"Stand By Me" replaced "Take Me Home Country Roads", which was the Hour #3 optional extra in 2013.

The 5/15/71 show leads off with one of the most controversial 'songs' (actually a recitation) to ever be on the show, "The Battle Hymn Of Lt. Calley". In it's final (of 3) weeks on the 40. At the time quite a few affiliates skipped over it when they broadcast the show.

Local affiliate did. Maybe 'quite a few' is an exaggeration, but I remember reading about the controversy related to the record in 'Billboard'. Didn't AT40 issue some sort of written warning with the tapes (it was still on tape then, correct?) during the weeks it was played? I think it was only played twice, since I think one of the three weeks it was in the 40 was a special countdown week. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that is what I remember.

According to Rob Durkee’s book, that was the first time AT40 carried a notice that a record might have controversial content and could be skipped by stations. I don’t know how many stations actually cut that piece of crap out of the countdown, but one in Alabama reportedly wrote back “We’ll play it twice” or somesuch.

As much as each of us may want to believe we're quite knowledgeable about the show, no one has 100% expertise of its history. Not even those who were involved with its production every week. That's why it's important to have forums like this -- as a whole, we learn from each other. mga707, I suspected there was an exaggeration in your post. But many program details continue to emerge from different sources, even 40 years later. Perhaps a Watermark file might be unearthed some day which will disclose information about this topic that remains vague right now. We can only hope. I'm one to eagerly seek out those kind of details, thus my questions. About your questions, yes, AT40 was distributed exclusively on reel tapes in May 1971. The single "Battle Hymn of Lt. Calley" was in fact played on AT40 three times. The May 1971 special was a 'spacer' between two weekly countdowns as a new production schedule was put into place. And now back to the countdown. EDIT: And yes, a note apparently went to stations warning them about the single's inclusion in the countdown, giving them the option to edit it from the local broadcast.

The "Do not tighten at all!" comment referred to Casey's pauses during the show's recording. Keep in mind, the show was still being recorded in real time at this point. Apparently he paused enough where, to keep momentum going, some pauses were edited out. There are many times the word "titen" appears in these production rundown sheets. Titen = edit. For the one referenced here, leaving in the pauses allowed stations an easier edit, if needed.

These early cue sheets with scrawled handwritten notes (from Casey? Don?) are interesting to read; they seem to have been for internal use, showing what needed to be fixed or where Casey or the production staff needed to “pick up” in the days of real time recording when mistakes meant lengthy re-recording. This one calls for “something in here somewhere” in the #13-9 range and looks like it’s using the word “Butt” with regard to “Stay Awhile” (I have no idea what it actually says or means.)
