Bummer--WODC only played one extra on the 2/2/74 show, and that was "Sunshine On My Shoulders". And that extra was overlapped at the beginning by a late return from the commercial break. Not to mention that song may be one of my all time least favorite top 40 hits...I would rather be waterboarded then listen to it. If Mike could answer this, it would be great. Were the first two played on the station? I figure the third one was a streaming only problem. I know the station is programmed for listeners in the Columbus, OH area but I was just wondering.

'Fraid I don't have an answer to that one. But I'm guessing I'm not the Mike you're looking for. I'm curious as to why everyone was expecting "Heart of Gold" as the returning extra - that is to say, everyone who guessed that is wrong. I was almost hoping that briguy would've come back and tried to guess between the 2011 choices - he'd have had a 1-in-3 chance at getting all three extras. Yes, he nailed both of the other two, and was the only one to do so. This week's (1972) extras, in this order: Think - Once You Understand (the dropper) Cher - The Way of Love (the repeat) Paul Simon - Mother and Child Reunion (the "new" song)

Extra! Extra! Here's all about it! Full commercial loads will bump out extras, which are put in by Premiere as optional fillers. Had the show started two minutes early, as it sometimes does, those extras would have made it. My favorite "Come And Get Your Love" missed by a minute or even less. What probably killed it was that "The Way It Is" by Bruce Hornsby started at 8:58A and it's a 4+minute song. Probably helping were those earlier extra weather alerts pushing Hornsby up a minute or two. Usually those extras make it. No weather hazards that we can tell this weekend so could be good, or lucky enough to have a 3:00 minute song come on at 8:58A this time! I think it's a Feb. '76 show this week.

'Fraid I don't have an answer to that one. But I'm guessing I'm not the Mike you're looking for. Mike Eiland I was looking for and he answered ETA: Listen to the 1979 show. Must have been extra time during this show. An interesting filler was used (I assume online only) between Herb Albert's extra and number 27: Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come On Eileen", an 80's song used during a 70's countdown show (and also couple other songs from the 80s were used). It didn't interrupt any of the show, though.

Cher is a good second choice, as her song went top 10. As for "Once You Understand"...

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess: 2/18/78 2nd Guess: 2/13/71
Last week I said I doubted they would air 1972, and guess what? My success rate has been paltry lately, so I won't go so far as to say that 1978 is a lock for this weekend, but it seems to be the best fit. If they were to go with 1971, we would get a 'B' show for the 3rd straight week.

Last weekend WLDE finally managed to air corrected show (this week) instead of falling one week behind on airing.

As for "Once You Understand"... My family still has that single in their record collection; it's for that reason that the song has nostalgic value for me.

I imagine if they played a song from 1975 that it wouldn't register as much. Is it the death of disco and the second British invasion creating this gap or our perception of 70s vs 80s based on an arbitrary timeline, I wonder. For anyone excited about songs from 1979, there is a countdown of the 150 biggest hits from that year going on over at Live365. Especially interesting given that AT40 only counted down the top 50 that year. The Final Countdown

When you were a kid did they threaten to play it and make you listen if you didn't stop acting up? I hardly think a song used for something like that would have any kind of nostalgic value today. No, every so often my family would break out the record collection and play a bunch of them. This was among them, "The Americans" from 74 last week was another. Many of these I had no idea of title or artist until sometime in the past like 5, 6, 7 years or so.
