It is surprising that AT40 never did a show devoted to Elvis Presley. Especially after he died. Elvis was all over the show in its early days. He frequently had hits, and his early hits were played as extras a lot, but Casey never did a show featuring the top 40 hits of the man who had more hiits than any other performer.
Below is my list of the forty biggest hits of Elvis Presley. The list is based on an inverse point system for every Top 40 hit Elvis had on the Top 100 and Hot 100.
1. “Don’t Be Cruel” 2. “Heartbreak Hotel” 3. “All Shook Up” 4. “Love Me Tender” 5. “Jailhouse Rock” 6. “Teddy Bear” 7. “Hound Dog” 8. “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” 9. “It’s Now or Never” 10. “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” 11. “Return to Sender” 12. “Don’t” 13. “Stuck on You” 14. “Too Much” 15. “Love Me” 16. “One Night” 17. “Wear My Ring Around Your Neck” 18. “Suspicious Minds” 19. “Good Luck Charm” 20. “Surrender” 21. “Can’t Help Falling in Love” 22. “Burning Love” 23. “A Big Hunk o’ Love” 24. “I Got Stung” 25. “A Fool Such as I” 26. “Crying in the Chapel” 27. “Hard Headed Woman” 28. “In the Ghetto” 29. “Don’t Cry Daddy” 30. “I Need Your Love Tonight” 31. “(You’re the) Devil in Disguise” 32. “She’s Not You” 33. “Little Sister” 34. “The Wonder of You” 35. “If I Can Dream” 36. “My Wish Came True” 37. “I Feel So Bad” 38. “Ask Me” 39. “One Broken Heart for Sale” 40. “Bossa Nova Baby”

Actually, it's not surprising at all. That's because in 1971, Watermark (AT40's parent company) released a 12-hour extravaganza, "The Elvis Presley Story". The program -- hosted by one-time AT40 sub Wink Martindale and produced by Ron Jacobs -- was updated in 1975 and again after Elvis died in 1977. The obvious next question -- did Watermark ever consider a similar show, "The Beatles Story"?

I think you got it right by listing Don't Be Cruel at #1 even though it only had 7 weeks at #1 on the top 100 chart. Joel Whitburn's latest and all of his books lists it with 11 weeks at #1 making it obvious that DBC was his biggest hit as opposed to say All Shook Up or Heartbreak Hotel. Only about half of those songs were ever played on AT40.

Great list! Why no bonus pts given for #1 weeks? No 60's song until #9 no '70's song until #22. Would've loved to hear that show!!!

Watermark's Elvis Presley Story was a great show, and I would like to find a copy. My uncle taped it years ago, but now he has no idea where his tapes are. People tend to forget how many hits Elvis had in the 70's - generally not charting as high as in the glory days, but still a consistent presence in the top 40. And it seemed like every time a chart record or feat was brought up, it was Elvis or the Beatles who'd accomplished it. Casey also hosted a video tribute to Elvis in the 80's, IIRC it was titled "Elvis: the Echo Never Dies".

WOW! Great list! Why no bonus pts given for #1 weeks? No 60's song until #9 no '70's song until #22. Would've loved to hear that show!!! Handing out "bonus points" would have unfairly skewed certain songs in favor of others. All number one songs already had bonus points - 1 - given to them just like #2 songs have 1 point more than a #3 song and so on. Ties (there was one: between "I Got Stung" and "A Fool Such as I" ) were broken chronologically. Whichever one arrived at the point total first got the upper position.

I don't understand the criteria Rob used for ranking his hits on his Top 40. Top 10 and non-Top 10 records alike are on it, and one ("How Great Thou Art") didn't even hit the charts at all. It's a good list, though.

I didn't look yet, but if its a top 100 and he has non top 40 songs on it, and he had 114 top 40 hits, I'm confused too.
