To update any of you wondering, I recorded the Terrestrial local show and it sounded great. With click of a button, you can drag off the Walkman to your PC to edit if you choose. Sound was full and deep - If you have an AT40 show in your market, this is a great backup. It records a 128kbps file and you can easily rename it after transferring off to your PC.
It's very simple and the battery life on the Walkman will amaze you...It is about 30 hours!

Hmmm. I bought the Sony walkman too but I'm not as satisfied with it. At first I bought the one that didnt record, it worked well though. Traded it in on the one that does. However, this model sometimes is unresponsive when pushing the buttons. sometimes I've noticed too that it gets flaky. Once I tried to tune up the dial and it went down, so I pressed down an it still went down. Weird. Im thinking I just got a lemon. That aside, the one thing I not happy with it is that the BEST recording it does is 160kbps. IMO that isnt good enough quality for an audio-phile like myself. I'd prefer 256kbps. Maybe 192 might work, *shrug*

I am also diligent to backup my new shows - make sure to have your shows under multiple roofs or in cloud storage. My friend recently had a devastating house fire and lost all his data, pics, video from his whole life. He had music backed up on 4 large ipods, but all in same area...I keep duplicates of video/pics/AT40 at my office. Easy to do! Most common to lose a 'C' drive and all your work is gone...

IMO, the compression of the shows over the internet is usually about 128kbps at best, I feel anything about 160kbps is just making larger files? I would like to hear more debate!
Shadster - sorry to hear that about your Walkman, I have 3 that have been great.

yea i steer clear of internet broadcsts for that very reason. quality just isnt good enuf. i know most of u dont have a choice though. Of course i love the over-the-air processing most of all. I prefer it over cd quality even. Most ppl think Im nuts.
and I will b recording WQSR tommorow nite OTA, hopefully it'll come in good

In any event recording the shows via any of the methods so far is great....right now I'm pretty backed up still having to edit the last 10 shows including this weekend's show (9-10 July). That takes some time might have to take a few days off work to make that happen. And yes atfanmpls after all that hard work....BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!!!

I use Totarecorder to record WQSR at 224kbps..I notice one thing they start the show like 5 minutes before its time. And notice the sloppyness of the filler ad's lately.Ok at lease I can record off the air on WTIC here in Connecticut. But they only run the 3 hour version.I record that version on my Roland Edirol recorder at 224kbps.No 70's show in the area yet.

Our local oldies station KQQL plays the Premiere 70's shows on Saturday mornings. I have recorded these off air a few times, but their on-line stream (as well as streams from stations like KLOU, WJGH, WBBG, etc.) is all a little crisper and clearer. As far as bit rate, I used 256kbps for a while, then realized it was overkill and just eating up more space on my hard drive, so I dropped to 192k and it sounds great (a friend of mine who also records reminded me that if the stream comes in at 128k, you don't gain anything by saving it at a higher bit rate--your recording can only be as good as the 128k stream at that point). Could probably even go down to 160k, but I like to have a little cushion. To each their own though--we probably all do things a little differently once we get used to our own style...

For anyone who listened to the WQSR stream, I have emailed the PD about the commercials running into the show on a couple of segments. I am waiting for a reply....if I get one.

I recorded it off air so no problems w/ segments getting chomped on but definitly had signal issues. It wasn't coming in good at 1st, started recording in mono but after a few songs, its started coming in decent. Then the airwaves went thru their 'transitional' period an I lost the station at the beginning of the Top20. It came back in by about #17ish an was pretty solid from then on. Reception does vary unfotunatly. Couple weeks ago for the '87 show, allthough I only caught the last 2 hours of it, reception that night was flawless. Tropo.....love it or hate it.
I'll hafta look into that Roland recorder though.

I recorded from that station one time as a substitute using my HD radio and it sounded pretty decent but not as good as the online streams. The OTA had a bit of static and I couldn't get it to the HD level if life depended on it. That radio I have is a portable, but it sure works with other major Twin Cities radio stations such as KDWB.
