Does anyone use Audcity? I have been using it for a while now - freeware program that records, edits, etc. Does a real nice job for me. I can save as .wav, .mp3, .aac, and a few others... I do - the only thing I don't like is the huge file sizes that result, even once I convert the file into a .wav. I prefer recording on-air with it to the possibility of software that does off-air recording anyway; I don't trust my laptop enough to pull that off. Here's my question: What would I use to edit things like commercials out of the recording once I've converted the project to a .wav? I used to keep the project file until waiting for a time when I could further explore Audacity to figure out how to do it with that, but ultimately I grew impatient and deleted them all, so now all I have are the .wav files. I use Audacity for editing too. Typically I record with it and as soon as the show ends, save to .wav format. Then you can import the .wav file back into Audacity later and cut out the commercials. The timers down at the bottom of the screen and the delete command do the trick. Once I have a cut show, I save to 192k mp3 file and throw out the huge .wav files. It's a pretty slick program once you get used to it - especially considering it's free.

audacity is pretty easy to use. Use the magnifiying glass to zoom in on the file once you open it, for a more precise cut. Then you hafta mark the section you want to cut, just like cutting an pasting only your just highliting the section you want gone an click the scissors to cut. If you screw up, yuo can still click 'undo'.

shadter, if you are recording the show each week on cassettes, how do you manage all the cassettes that you accumulate? I can get the signal for WINC and WQSR OK in the car but not my tuner at home since I'm not using an external antenna. I prefer to record the stream with the computer using Replay AV8 or Replay Media Catcher. Using the PC is a real god send because you can record for hours unattended. The recordings doesn't take up any room in the house and you can access the files with a single click of the mouse. I have accumulated over 200 shows so far. I'm collecting all the shows I can that are being offered because who knows how long the rebroadcasts will last. Thanks to Premier for providing them for free. Before them it was hard to get a hold of these old shows. For editing out the commercials from recordings, I use mp3DirectCut from www.mpesch3.dePros: 1) Freeware 2) It displays a waveform for the mp3 you're editing so you can visually see what you're cutting out. 3) It has previews of cuts & edit points 4) Fast save of changes since it doesn't recode the mp3 Cons: 1) Interface take some practice to get used to Just tried mp3DirectCut and it is what I want. As you said, interface takes some practice to get used to, though. Thank you.

I record off WQSR using Replav A/V. The quality is awesome. I edit out all comercials and basically get a 3h 20 minute show from it. I tried other stations and although the quality is good, its not as crisp and stereo sound like WQSR sends out. Unfortunately WQSR is not available outside the US. Any other stations provide good sound quality? I tried WFMX Mix 107.9. But sometimes there's a glitch in the recording and no output file is produced.

I have a Mac so use iRecordMusic to record from the stream. I use Itunes to edit. I've begun recording two versions of each 70s/80s show just in case songs are skipped, quality is poor, etc. Because I'd rather only have complete shows, I don't record and edit any of the late 70s shows where they play only three of the four hours. So frustrating since I do love alot of those songs...

How do edit by using Itunes because I use WavePad and I get a messed up quality when I do it, so I just leave all of my recordings alone from now on.

After recording AT 40 using Replay AV8, I use WavePad Audio Editor to edit the show. I'm using WavePad v 4.52. Their website is: www.nch.com.au/wavepadVersion 4.52 is an older version of WavePad. I tried their upgraded, later version but utimately uninstalled the new version and went back to version 4.52. It's funny what you said - I did the exact same thing - I use Soundtap to record, but like you, use WavePad - I also uninstalled the newer version, and reinstalled the older version - didn't care for the 'upgrade' either.

Good replies from everyone - I set my laptop next to regular computer. My PC has good PCI soundcard and I use a 1/8" stereo x 2 cord to connect the two. I can hear the feed, which is handy. I use Roxio Creator to capture and their Sound Editor to edit. I like to break up 70's shows into 2 segments, '79-on shows into 3 segments so I can transfer to CDRs to listen in the car or boat. I like to add a Casey/AT40 graphic to the tags that pops up when I play on WMP or MP3 player.
I have a newer Sony Walkman that I can record a really good quality FM-to-MP3 (of KQQL). I have not yet tried an entire show, but for any of you that want a good way to capture FM and have the ability to transfer of the device to PC, that is a pretty inexpensive and easy option. Your headphones are the antenna, so keep them out by a window!

The show I have been waiting for forever AND i screwed up my taping and missed the 1st hour. Reason I ask for WQSR is the quality is superior to the other stations. I would be ever so greatful for any help. Did you ever get that first hour of the show?

Here is a link to the Sony "S" Series at Best Buy.com. The Walkman is just like a flash player, it comes with a USB cord and the battery life is 20-30 hours easy. Also plays great video. I highly recommend skullcandy headphones to go with it. I have not recorded and transferred to my PC, I am going to try to transfer am mp3 off tonight. I believe it records to a 192kbps mp3. It's a shame Microsoft or Sony didn't get to market with easy-to-use flash type products like this, it is much easier to use than an ipod. www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+Walkman+16GB*+MP3+Player+-+Black/9443854.p?id=1218105500007&skuId=9443854
