Sorry for starting this thread so peculiar.
Sometimes we can listen to our favourite shows online, satellite, terrestrial radio. Now and in the past.
The funniest time I heard once an AT40 show was on shortwave radio and it was in the 80´s.
I was scanning short wave bands and I picked the voice of Casey presenting the show.
It was a regular show, the one from that week, not a reprise, on World Radio New Orleans, WRNO, on the short wave band and it was very funny, because right before the number 1, they changed frequencies, I mean, they stopped transmittting on the frequency , they were on in that moment, to continous on another one which was, obviously , mentioned before the signing off , but I was not able to pick the new one , so I missed the final.
That is a weird radio band to listen to AT40, a musical show which is created for FM radio ( at least in those last years).
I know AT40 was aired on AM radio in The States, on FM, etc.
In Europe, AT40 was aired on medium wave AFN-Frankfurt 783 Khz. It was so popular and well followed not only in Germany.
In Spain, AT40 can be heard on AFRTS stations in Rota (Cádiz), Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid ), Morón ( Sevilla) and Zaragoza.

I hated listening to AT40 on AFN radio back in 1986-1988 because they were always one week behind and then they'd air sports related stuff in place of AT40 while the programme was in progress. Sometime I'd only get the top ten! Horrible horrible programming ...

I know what you mean.
Fortunately, AT40 on AFRTS Rota station was saturdays 2 to 6 pm, when in The States was not many sports activity, but I remember when they cut other late evening or night musical shows, just like The Countdown with Walt Baby Love for those "Sports in Action" contents with live american football via submarine cable and lately via satellite.
Lately there was a satellite feed of Voice Of America (VoA) to Europe with AT40, I did not have a satellite system then. Now VoA MusicMix dont have anything, but The Countdown , on satellite.

if you were a international affiliate, it just made sense to run the show a week late, as most stations in my province did. This is long before the current mp3 internet affiliate download delivery of today, you still had to ship a set of program discs to each station by air mail. watermark always put "dated broadcast material, please rush, do not crush" on the mailer but you're shipping method is only as good as the mail, and if you're getting it potentially late on a regular basis, you run it a week late.
I remember one time one station I used to listen to it on reran the previous weeks countdown because of a mail strike. not much more you can do.
I wonder if there were any stories floating out of the watermark mail room after so many years shipping program discs on a weekly basis. That mustve been organized chaos on a regular basis.

And so the story goes...back in the early days of AT40 (the first 15 months to be precise) operations manager Stew Hilner had to deal with not only shipping but inventorying returned (and sometimes edited) reel-to-reel tapes.

And so the story goes...back in the early days of AT40 (the first 15 months to be precise) operations manager Stew Hilner had to deal with not only shipping but inventorying returned (and sometimes edited) reel-to-reel tapes. Oh I know, I read the book. Reel delivery for a multihour weekly countdown is just not practical, more so when stations start recording over or using parts of the reels. I worked at a station where they got a 2 hour weekly show on one reel on thin tape so it will fit, and we never used the tape, just sent them back. We did however wipe commerical reels when the spot was outdated and often used them for dubs for other stations. This makes you wonder all the more how Drake Chenault duped and shipped out reels of high quality for their formats on a weekly basis for automated stations of the 70's and 80s using reel decks for music. I'm guessing they didn't have as much of a affiliate list as AT40. Still, even 4 LPs in a mailer X 500-1000 stations each week is quite a feat for a mail room. Who ever pressed the watermark discs anyway? that was never mentioned...the Casey's Top 40 stuff was pressed by KM Records of Burbank who pressed all Westwood One Material in addition to some other syndicators like the latter material of Creative Radio Networks. Westwood One had a stake in KM or actually owned them at one point.

Can be the "fake" AT40 on July 7th 1979, hosted by Townsed Coleman of WGCL in Cleveland, Ohio , to be considered an AT40 show?.

I would say not since the show was not produced by Watermark which held the rights to AT40 at that time.

Thanks.
On today´s show, march 6th 1976, Casey reads a letter from a listener , eventually in Jamaica , who listens to the familiar voice of Casey ( AT40) in a local radio station among the jungle of spanish radio stations and since then, he doesnt change the dial.

my experience is stranger too I´m a former soccer player and in 1991 I was 16 and travel to Italy, in the city of Gradisca , near Venecia, for a tournament...
In my bag, I take a radio, not a walkman, a radio because my love to hear radio in my country..
every night I put my headphones and tried to sintonize italian radio stations
one night, sunday , close to midnight, I was shocked when I hear Shadoe´s fantastic voice
and there it was, the AMERICAN TOP 40 it was April, and Shadoe announce "Cry for help" by Rick Astley
in the shadows, I took a pencil and a paper and write the top 10 songs
for me, it was amazing

Probably, but as far as I remember Casey never mentioned an italian radio station, if so, one from Milano.
This is the current outlet of AFN in Italy, according to wikipedia:

AFN Livorno-Power 107La Maddalena 106.0?
