The Bruce Vidal show was really good. There’s an interesting article in the corresponding R&R issue about song lengths. Back in 1988, the average top 40 song was only 4 minutes 7 seconds. Today I imagine it’s under 3 minutes. ...which may not be a bad thing, considering the rapidly declining quality of pop music as of late.

Are you saying that because you are older and just don't like the music of today? Or do you really think there is a declining quality? I'd argue the quality of the CHR product is much better now than it was, say, in 2001-2003

For the last few years I've been watching the Billboard montage videos and for the latest ones I can claim to like less than 10% of the top 50.

So if it was Aug 11, 2001, is the SS is Samantha Mumba - Don't Need You To (Tell Me I'm Pretty)? That was last aired in 2017. I think that song might not make it on WT40 charts in future..

That's the one (I've only listened to the opening segment of the countdown). I don't know if that song made Rick's chart; it barely made AT40 (one week at #40 on 9/01/01).

The 1986 show was good but the segment that played Nos. 21-19 was missing. Rick teased that Huey Lewis had the highest debut since the Jackson 5, but we missed “Stuck With You.” Any idea what the Jackson 5 song was? Thanks

That entered the top 40 (in Billboard) at #15 in April 1971. Since there was no Radio & Records yet then, Rick may have been citing Billboard, which he sometimes did for past chart stats even if they post-dated R&R's 1973 inception. (Though citing that overlooks Isaac Hayes' "Theme From 'Shaft'", which debuted even higher--at #9--later in 1971.)

That makes sense, thanks. I guess they used Billboard for their history instead of Cashbox prior to the start of R&R.

App is updated. This week's shows are: August 15, 1987 August 16, 1997 August 17, 2002 The app mislabels the 80s show as being from 1985. I turned it on and it is from 1987.

The 2002 show was enjoyable. As far as I can tell, everyone who was already alive back then still is (Elvis had been dead for a number of years). How far back could we go to find a Top 40 chart where every artist on it is still alive? I'm guessing mid '90s. The most relevant artist today on the 2002 chart would be Pink, at least at Hot AC.
