On this weekend's show, Nina says that Rick Springfield's "What Kind of Fool Am I" holds at #21 "for another week." Actually, it's Rick's sixth consecutive week in that spot. The hardcore chart nerds on the forum will appreciate this. Here's how Billboard graded the song from week to week during that stretch:
July 3, 1982...up #24 to #21, with a "superstar" July 10...holding at #21, with a "star" July 17...holding, with a "star" July 24...holding, with a "star" July 31...holding, with a "star" August 7...holding, with nothing
So, in the (thankfully) brief, two-and-a-half-year-long era of Wardlow's Folly, a.k.a. the holding pattern and "superstar" rules, did any song come close to Rick's streak of settling for a mere "star" on this many charts in succession?
And in case you were curious, here are the Cash Box and Radio & Records rankings for the same six-week span:
CB: 23-20-19-19-38-45 R&R: 14-10-9-9-10-15

Next week it'll be all about 1981. Probably August 22, 1981. At least that means we probably won't get a fourth straight play of September 19, 1981 (which was my 6th birthday BTW.)

According to the schedule, it looks like Alan will be absent this week, so no "the good, the bad, and the ugly" comments.

I've just finished compiling a spreadsheet of the charts featured on this countdown since they began using Billboard in early 2012. I did a similar list for the 90's countdown. Anyhow, in 6.5 years, not a single chart from the following months has ever been featured:
April 1984 August 1987 October 1987 January 1988 June 1988 November 1988
And for these months, only one chart has even been played. In some cases, the same chart was used more than once:
January 1980 March 1980 August 1980 October 1980 January 1981 September 1981 January 1983 April 1983 September 1983 February 1984 July 1984 September 1984 January 1985 February 1986 September 1986 December 1986 March 1987 December 1987 August 1988 September 1988 May 1989 July 1989 December 1989

Well hopefully August 1987 will be crossed off the list if next week happens to be 1987, and to not hold off 1987 until September again for the past several years.

Here's hoping they use the August 29th chart. Theoretically, they should as it's closer to the current date, but I wonder since the show will mostly air in September if that will affect the decision.

I just heard Mark Goodman confirm that they are doing August 29th, making it the first August 1987 chart they've done.

Next week it'll be all about 1980. Probably September 6, 1980--another show that at least we won't get from Casey/Premiere.

Looks more than likely. Turns out it was last used in 2010 back when they would use Cashbox more often, but they went with Billboard for that particular week.
I'm predicting 1985, 1983, then 1986 for the rest of September.

Next week it'll be all about 1985! Oh boy, 9/14/85--i.e. Dead Dog Week. Of course you won't know that from the VJ's show, though here the infamous "uptempo g--d--- number" "Dare Me" will be followed by Billy Joel saying "You're only human, don't forget your second wind", good advice for Casey and others who are stressed or frustrated.
