March 15, 1975Falling off:
George McCrae - I Get Lifted (37) - I seem to recall this was pretty good, of course it's no "Rock Your Baby" but it was a decent enough follow-up
Neil Diamond - I've Been This Way Before (34) - wtf did this sound like again?
Grand Funk - Some Kind Of Wonderful (30) - Of course, it's the song that AT40 ranked erroneously too high on the year-end! Great song though, one of my favourites from them
Linda Ronstadt - You're No Good (26) - Her first and only #1 hit, and the song that kickstarted her hit streak! It was a great one - shame it fell off this week.
Carole King - Nightingale (24) - Not quite as good as her "Tapestry" stuff, but this was still pretty good.
40. Love Unlimited Orchestra - Satin Soul (debut) - A decent enough instrumental from the group who gave us "Love's Theme" a year earlier.
39. Ohio Players - Fire (39) - A former #1 from this funk group pauses on its way out - a definite classic, one of my favourites from them!
38. The Blackbyrds - Walking In Rhythm (debut) - Their first of just two top 40 hits, it was a good soul tune!
37. Charlie Daniels Band - The South's Gonna Do It (debut) - Their style mixed country with Southern rock - this was an example of the latter. It was alright but I prefer their 1979-82 hits.
36. Fanny - Butter Boy (debut) - meh, this was nothing overly special
35. Elton John - Philadelphia Freedom (debut) - Right in the midst of his hit streak of the 70's, this song blazed onto the charts! An upbeat rockin' groove, it was no surprise this got to #1 shortly after - great song, one of my favourites from him!
34. David Gates - Never Let Her Go (29) - The first solo hit by the Bread singer - nice song that reminds me of his stuff with his old group.
33. Bad Company - Movin' On (19) - One of many hits this British classic rock group had in the 70's - good song, much like most of their hits.
32. Freddy Fender - Before The Next Teardrop Falls (40) - No. Just no.
31. Dan Fogelberg - Part Of The Plan (35) - Given how many ballads he hit with in the 80's, I was surprised at how upbeat this was! Good song - definitely underrated compared to his slower stuff.
30. Ben E. King - Supernatural Thing (38) - The first hit in a decade by this legendary soul man, and his last until the re-release of his classic "Stand By Me" in 1986. Great song - very funky, it shows he fit the 70's as well as he did in the 60's.
29. Hot Chocolate - Emma (36) - One of their deepest songs lyrically, it was written about the death of the lead singer's mother. Good song - kinda reminds me of "Brother Louie", which they wrote as well.
28. Maria Muldaur - I'm A Woman (12) - She originally recorded this in the 50's, then redid it in the 70's - gotta say not a fan of this one.
27. Chicago - Harry Truman (33) - A rare political song by Chicago, I think it worked well for them - one of their most underrated, surprised it didn't make the tracklist of "The Very Best Of Chicago: Only The Beginning" - it was their only top 40 hit that wasn't included.
26. Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Roll On Down The Highway (14) - A legendary Canadian rock band here with one of their most famous songs - love the riffs here, one of my favourites from them!
25. Helen Reddy - Emotion (32) - No. Just no.
24. Sammy Johns - Chevy Van (31) - A Chevy van sounds like a perfect makeout spot, doesn't it?
Good song - shame it was his only hit.
23. Rufus & Chaka Khan - Once You Get Started (28) - Interesting story about how Stevie Wonder wrote them a song, they rejected it then wrote another! This was a good song, much like most of Rufus/Chaka Khan's stuff.
22. B.J. Thomas - Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song (27) - This was just so-so for me - I prefer "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head".
21. Average White Band - Pick Up The Pieces (9) - Who knew an "average white band" from Scotland would be this funky? Great song - easily one of my favourite instrumental hits!
20. Elvis Presley - My Boy (20) - Originally recorded by Richard Harris, The King took this into the top 40. It was alright, but overall I feel his 70's stuff wasn't that strong compared to his classics.
19. The Jackson 5 - I Am Love (22) - I like this one, but they had so many better songs
18. Sweet Sensation - Sad Sweet Dreamer (21) - The only hit this British group had - it was an alright one but I prefer the unrelated American dance group of the same name.
17. Al Martino - To The Door Of The Sun (18) - No. Just no.
16. Polly Brown - Up In A Puff Of Smoke (17) - this was just ok
15. Shirley & Company - Shame, Shame, Shame (23) - What a random comeback from a 50's singer in the 70's! This was a good song though
14. Ringo Starr - Snookeroo (25) - Casey flipped the single over as he usually played "No No Song". I like that one better but this was good too.
13. The Eagles - Best Of My Love (7) - Casey went through their chart history up to this point as this was their first #1 hit. Little did he know they'd have four more after this.
Great song - one of their best!
12. Joe Cocker - You Are So Beautiful (16) - great song! A nice, simple love ballad here that he sang very well.
11. Phoebe Snow - Poetry Man (15) - The 70's were one of the greatest decades for singer-songwriters, and songs like this show why. Interesting story about how she got her name as well.
10. Sugarloaf - Don't Call Us, We'll Call You (11) - Their second and last top 40 hit - good song!
9. Electric Light Orchestra - Can't Get It Out Of My Head (10) - After a few years of trying, this song finally brought the legendary band led by Jeff Lynne into the top 40 - and what a hit it was! Great song, though I prefer many others from them.
8. B.T. Express - Express (13) - While not quite as good as "Do It (Til You're Satisfied)", this was still a pretty good follow-up.
7. America - Lonely People (5) - For a band whose lyrics didn't make much sense before this, they could still do a more serious song lyrically quite well, as this showed - great song!
6. Styx - Lady (6) - Originally released in 1973, this band from Chicago finally hit big with this, their first top 40 hit. Great song that set the stage for an incredible career after this!
5. Minnie Riperton - Lovin' You (8) - I know a lot of people who hate this song with a burning passion so you could say this is a guilty pleasure for me as I really like it.
4. Olivia Newton-John - Have You Never Been Mellow (1) - Wow, had no idea the Grammy for Record of the Year was that female dominated in the early 70's! Great song - I prefer her more "pop" period from 1978-85 but this is still pretty good.
3. LaBelle - Lady Marmalade (4) - After a few hits in the 60's, Patti LaBelle returned with her trio here and got her signature song - great song that was remade for "Moulin Rouge" in 2001 as well.
2. Frankie Valli - My Eyes Adored You (3) - Speaking of 60's acts making comebacks, this was the return of the Four Seasons frontman! Great song, though it does give the impression he's stalking the girl.
1. Doobie Brothers - Black Water (2) - As classic as this is, it's hard to believe it started out as a B-side the previous year! I guess they knew a hit when they had one.
Great song - especially the back and forth part near the end!
