Drops:
SAMMY HAGGAR - Two Sides To Love - I prefer his other hits such as " I Can't Drive 55" and "Give To Live". I can't believe this man is in his 60s wow!
RICK JAMES - 17 - Great song and totally controversial before R Kelly came along!
VAN HALEN - Panama - This video used to crack me up when I was a kid. This is on my favourites with David Lee Roth on vocals. "Hot For Teacher" should have made the top 40, that's another great song/video and it was out around this time. It peaked at #56.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - Dancing In The Dark - Great record there! Even my mom liked this gem! I like all but one of all 7 singles from this incredible LP "Born In The USA" quite a bit. My least favourite is the 1985-86 hit "My Hometown".
40. RICK SPRINGFIELD - Bop Til Ya Drop - Shame on them, they played the LP version! I prefer the 7" single version. I remember skating to this hot jam, yeah!
39. THE FIXX - Are We Ourselves - Love this song, I remember this being MTV's "Sneak Preview' and ignoring this at the time. Also my favourite by them was "One Thing Leads To Another". Now it's "Saved By Zero".
38. SPANDAU BALLET - Only When You Leave - I enjoy much of their performances on "wax", and this one is my least favourite. They even performed this on Soul Train and I was appalled then.
37. POINTER SISTERS - I'm So Excited - I have alway been into this song, this is one of their best. I'm so glad that they gave this a 2nd chance because I did not hear this up until this time (1984).
36. BILLY OCEAN - Carribean Queen (No More Love On The Run) - This is what turned me on to Billy Ocean's recordings. After I heard this song, like Joe's 1993 "I'm In Luv", he became my favourite male singer of ALL TIME, well that's until Joe came along, ya know.
35. GLENN FREY - Supergroups that Casey was talking about, I thought that it was perhaps "Chicago" until he said solo. No one went solo in 1984 from that group that we have to our knowledge. Anyway this is my favourite Glenn Frey song, and it's an IPOD banger for me.
34. LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM - Go Insane - Phenomenal piece of music that helped make my 1984. So it did not make the top ten, I guess it just wasn't as hot as the rest of the songs in the top 40. 1984 had some fierce competition, now.
33. DONNA SUMMER - There Goes My Baby - No, just no as some would say. The production and the video was pretty darn "hot", but I just did not like this song. Each time I'd hear just just like it was 25 years ago, I'd wanna grit my teeth.
32. ELTON JOHN - Sad Songs (Say So Much) - I will probably always be into this like I was 20 years ago! Does anyone remember that Sasoon Jeans commercial with not only this song in it but also Elton John singing "put them on/put on them on/ put on those Sasoons"? This record also reminds me of my grandma, who is blessed and still alive pushing 90, she called this kind of music "devil music". I could hear her say "turn them off/turn them off".
31. LAURA BRANIGAN - The Lucky One - I'm gonna have ta say, "no". It just wasn't her best.
2009 Extra: WHAM - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go - Ha! Ha! I got 3/4 right on the "extras" predictions!
They cut out the second verse on this one, oh well, whatever. Great song, but overplayed. I liked the 1983 Wham a little more, they were a little edgier and funkier.
30. JACKSONS - State Of Shock - Enjoyable and somewhat a humourous song. This is from one of the first albums that I have ever purchased. I prefer "Torture" (single version) and "Body" (with Marlon singing lead). One more note Marlon did his solo thing in 1987 and it was not too flattering even though "Don't Go" hit #1 on the R&R Urban charts, I still did not like it. "Baby Tonight" was even worse.
29. EURYTHMICS - Right By Your Side - Nice little calypso touch there! When I was in Europe AFN out Frankfurt used to spin this quite a bit between 1986 and 1989 as their "Gold".
28. BILLY JOEL - Leave A Tender Moment Alone - Excellent smoove ballad, here. It could have charted a little higher than #27, maybe it was "too soft" for top 40 radio. This spent two weeks at #1 on AC charts.
LDD: BARRY MANILOW - Looks Like We Made It - Not no, but heck no!
27. MADONNA - Lucky Star - My ultimate favourite Madonna song ever! I could dance to this forever and ever! I own the original 7" version of the song, now. I've searching for this for years and finally bough this at a "used" record store. Thank the Lord! This is one of the weeks that they played the full LP version. I'm surprised that Premiere did not edit this one.
26. STEVIE WONDER - I Just Called To Say I Love You - Overplayed but not too bad. It was just never my cup of tea. I prefer "Love Light In Flight".
25. JACKSONS- Torture - One of the first 45s I ever "copped". This was the year I started buying 45s and all!
24. CHICAGO - Hard Habit To Break - Superb and smoove. The lead vocals by Bill Champlin is just outstanding. Didn't he sing lead on "Will You Still Love Me"? That is another one of my favourite songs.
23. TWISTED SISTER - We're Not Gonna Take It - Love the video, I actually bought the full version from Itunes and the song. I listened to just about EVERYTHING in 1984 thanks to the then MTV. 25 years later I listen to this more than top 40 music. You know when I went to a broadcasting school in one of my studio classes we were only allowed to play either "Urban" songs or "AOR songs". Now I can understand why.. I listen to these formats much more than Mainstream.
22. DAN HARTMAN- I Can Dream About You - First "pop/rock n roll" song I ever bought. I thought that this by an R&B group. The video was somewhat deceiving but I did not read the credits too closely, oh well, whatever..
21. NIGHT RANGER - When You Close Your Eyes - Memorable song hat made my 1984, I love the video.
20. JERMAINE JACKSON - Dynamite - I saw this video in a hotel room and I liked this song ever since! I was like, "that's Jermaine Jackson"? Pretty shocking. Kinda reminds me of "Delirious" by Prince.
19. JULIO IGLESIAS & DIANA ROSS - All Of You - Uh, no.
18. BANANARAMA - Cruel Summer - I love this group and yes this is overspun. I used to love this song, only now I can spin this so much.
17. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - Cover Me - Excellent!
16. RATT - Round And Round - Not too bad, I prefer "Lay It Down".
15. BILLY SQUIER - Rock Me Tonite - Uh, no.
14. PEOBO BRYSON - If Ever You're In My Arms Again - Smoove and soothing!
13. SHEILA E - The Glamourous Life - Killa drums and beat. Everlasting love for this song!
12. PETER WOLF - Light Out - This reminds me of grade school. When the lunch attendant commanded us students to be quiet, she'd turn the "lights out" when we were loud and out of hand. Another IPOD banger for me!
11. PRINCE - When Doves Cry - Thanks to my cousin Stevie from Kansas City, KS, I decided to buy this single as well. He had a couple of 45s before I did. So Stevie, if you're reading "hello", after 25 long years!
10. THE CARS - Drive - One of their best with the late Benjamin Orr.
09. COREY HART - Sunglasses At Night - Excellent! Phenomenal! I had his GH CD but someone borrowed it and never returned it.
08. SCANDAL - The Warrior - Superb! Timeless!
07. HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS- If This Is It - Great video and song! Most can relate, right?
06. PRINCE - Let's Go Crazy - Uh, no.
05. LIONEL RICHIE - Stuck On You - I have to say "no" to this one as well. I prefer many of his other hits.
LDD : Irene Cara - Out Here On My Own - Nope!
04. RAY PARKER JR - Ghostbusters - He did not want to sing the words "ghostbusters" it was too awkward for him, so he grabbed some helped from others chanting the words and it worked. I prefer his other songs such as "Jamie" & "Can't Get Over Loving You".
03. CYNDI LAUPER - She Bop - I used to always hear the 12" version on the radio and it was rad! Loved it! The LP version sounds kind of bland. Overall it is a memorable song.
02. JOHN WAITE - Missing You - Funny that Tina Turner could not turn her version into a big hit like John's. And I prefer this version of course. After I write this I'm going to watch that same great video I remember from 25 years ago.
01. TINA TURNER - What's Love Got To Do With It - Hot song and album, this is where this woman won me over! This is one of 3 singles that I bought when I started buying 45s.
