I'm confused by this list. I see numerous songs that were not climbing when they fell off the following week.

But falling off the Top 40 when the peak position is in the 30's is the norm. There is nothing unusual and noteworthy about that, is there?

Interesting that 3 of Simply Red's top 40 hits fell right out of the top 40 from the 20's (though "Something Got Me Started" might not have but for the chart methodology.) And the two that didn't--1986's "Holding Back the Years" and 1989's "If You Don't Know Me By Now"--both went all the way to #1.

No, that would go to the Beatles Medley (the one by the Beatles, not Stars On 45). The song peaked at #12 for three weeks in May, 1982, fell to #20, then took a humongous drop to #92 the week after that. That's a 72-point drop, my friend, somewhat dwarfing the 56-notch fall of "Kiss In The Dark". I never understood how songs dropped so fast from their peak positions. I know that part of it had to do with the rule at the time of forcing songs to stay in the same positions while they lost their "stars" ("bullets"), but the charts were weird in 1982 that the drops seemed bigger than ever. Quite frequently that year songs would drop from the top 20 all the way down to the '80s or '90s. You didn't see it very often in other years. I can certainly understand songs dropping off the top 40 if they've peaked in the 30s (even while moving up), and sometimes in the lower 20s. I'm surprised that songs as high as the top 20 or even top 10 would fall right out of the countdown. There was a time when Casey didn't mention the week's droppers. Fans keeping track at home must have wondered what happened! To me, it doesn't seem realistic that songs would drop so quickly from their peaks - Donna Summer moving from 11 to 10, then the next week dropping to 59? ELO peaking at 13 then dropping right out with "All Over the World"? Donna Summer's "Muscles" spending so long at No. 10 the losing a spot in the top 40 in just one week? Interesting charts back then

I think, in January 1995, Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" climbed to its peak of #7, I think (someone please clarify)? And I know it fell out of the top ten and the top 40 that same week. This happened a week or two before the original run's finale.

"All I Want For Christmas" peaked at #9 on Jan 14 and was gone the next week. Shadoe even announced it after #40 (the only debut) that week.
