Per this week's AT40- the 80's, "Roll Over Beethoven" holds (or then-held, in any case) the record for the highest debut in the Top 40 only to fall out the next week.
Chuck Berry debuted at 29 on the Top 40 (and Hot 100) in 6/30/1956, then the next week fell to 87. Climbed to 71, then went to 78, then 83, then fell out entirely.

I know this precedes the AT40 era; however I've always been intrigued by the chart history of a certain novelty song that received significant airplay during the month of August 1966 and then immediately fell off the charts. It's "They're Coming to Take Me Away (Ha Ha)" by Napoleon XIV (a/k/a Jerry Samuels). Its Billboard hot 100 positioning was 50-11-5-3-5-37.

One might think that the fast-rise, fast-fall of "They're Coming To Take Me Away (Ha Ha)" was because that's the typical chart run of novelty songs, which I imagine did apply there, but the other reason was because stations were forced to drop it because it wasn't politically correct (i.e. making fun of the mentally ill). So that's why it peaked so fast, then free-fell. I believe it still holds the record for the biggest drop within the Top 40.

Hervard that was THE reason. Many people complained and threatened to boycott stations.
They were wrong about their complaint, it wasn't trying to make fun of the mentally ill, but try telling career complainers anything (like the catholic church and anything they complain about, which is usually silly)

l wanted to ask (about a few years old comment)
People were talking about 80-83 and the fast drops or even the long time at one position and it being a Billboard (in a way) screwup with their new star system and such...
Alot of people complain when I do a countdown special and Soundscan stuff is included. Some say those songs should be handicapped so they don't dominate (which I agree with)... Some say they should be left alone...
My question is: How is 80-83 any different? Certain changes in Billboards methods at any point in time... Shouldn't THEY get handicapping considerations too?

Truth be told, most of the years or periods of time need to be handicapped. The 60s and early 70s featured huge drops and songs not staying on the chart as long as before or after that period. For a short period in late 1974, songs were falling like a rock from their peak positions. I doubt that is reflective of the songs as much as a methodology change.
Billboard did such a handicapping when they came out with their top 100 of the Hot 100 in 2008. They did a great job IMO. If only any of us knew how they did it, we could put this issue to rest.

Following up on my post about "They're Coming to Take Me Away (Ha Ha)", I recall what bestmusicexpert cited; that is, stations were being threatened to discontinue playing the song back in the day. Ironically, I've worked (in financial management) for several mental health treatment facilities over the decades, yet have found the song moderately entertaining.

Looking at the upcoming AT40 chart, "Something Better" by Audien featuring Lady Antebellum fell off after climbing seven notches the week before.

Then, there was Dave Edmunds' 'Slipping away'. It spent 1 week on AT40, at #39, then, 'slipped away'.

Most recently, there was "2002" by Anne-Marie. It went 39-37-35-34-33-off.

Did "Don't Cry" by Guns 'n Roses fall out of AT40 from #10 when it switched the chart source?
