WENS eventually carried CT40 for a while and even AT20 HAC for a time. They changed formats and calls in the 2000s to Hank FM WLHK, "anything" country. I will add: Indianapolis lawyer Jeff Simulyan and two partners formed Emmis Communications (yep, the ones responsible for L.A.'s Power 106 in a little over 3 years!), and an often-used slogan for WENS was that they were Emmis's flagship station. Emmis I believe was also responsible for switching WNBC Radio in New York to what is now known as WFAN.

[/li][li]KMOX St. Louis, MO [/quote] Will answer this one. This was their first year carrying the show they changed their calls to KHTR a few months later. They carried the show until '88 a little after Casey left the show after they flipped to an oldies format with their current calls KLOU. Of course they also AT40 the 70s on Sunday morning as soon as this blasted Christmas music comes to an end.

Sorry, forgot to post these yesterday... You might notice for this week that two of the stations have been read once already; one of the two joined the family this week. Whatever happened to...? (December 13, 1986) - WZXY Kingsport, TN - Here's an interesting one. Sometime in the early 90s (could be 7/1/91), they changed to Oldies and stayed that way through much of the 2000s. On the date in '91, they changed call letters to WKOS. On some unspecified date in the 2000s, this station went back to Top 40, which they remain now. I don't know if they're a current AT40 affiliate or not; they don't have much of a schedule on their website. There are some TV spots from the WZXY era available on YouTube, however:
Spot 1, from 7-11-85 Spot 2, from 12-12-85
- Z-Fun Moscow, ID - I wonder if this is KZFN. If so, they're still a Top 40 station to this day - and yes, they have the current AT40.
- KATQ Plentywood, MT - Now Country.
- Rock 107 Utica-Rome, NY - As WRCK, despite the call letters, they were actually Top 40 until June 1994, when they were purchased by Galaxy Communications. Then, they were Classic Rock until October 2007. Now owned by the Educational Media Foundation, they're a Christian station as WKVU.
- KEGL Dallas - Special thanks to the Dallas radio website for extra info on this one. Changed to Active Rock on 6/12/92. Stayed with that until 5/18/04. After going AC and Spanish, they went back to Active Rock on 12/18/07 - and remain that way today. Note that KAFM was the Dallas affiliate on 11/28/81, and they're now KZPS. KEGL still has the same call letters now that they did then, but Clear Channel owns both KEGL and KZPS today. I have one final footnote on this station - I'll save that to the end.
- KWDG Idabel, OK - On 12/12/90, they became KBEL, a Country station. Apparently, they were a rock station at the time they changed.
- WING 410 Dayton - Now an ESPN Sports station. Judging from what I read on Wiki, it would seem that this station wasn't to remain Top 40 for very much longer after this show.
- WXTC Charleston, SC - This was apparently a soft AC station that still carried the show. On 10/12/07, they became WIWF, a Country station.
- WMJQ - Rochester, NY - They're now WBEE, a Country station since the late 80s. They were apparently only WMJQ in '86 and '87.
- WLX Minor Hill, TN - WLX seems to have been a branding, with the call letters actually WLLX. Not long after this show, Hundley Batts, Sr. and Dr. Virginia Caples (a married couple) acquired this station and it became an Urban station, which it remains today. The FCC assigned this station the WEUZ call letters on April 6, 2000.
- KIMN Denver - We know the story on this one already; it was a "Great Radio Station" two weeks ago on 11/28/81.
New to the American Top 40 family this week: - KMSD Milbank, SD - I'm guessing this is the station at 1510 AM. They're Oldies now.
- WCAU Philadelphia - We know this one already, too; it was a "Great Radio Station" three weeks ago on 11/21/87.
One last thing about KEGL - the Dallas radio site says this station had a Top 40 format from 1/20/81 to 9/12/84, and a Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) format from 9/12/84 to 6/12/92. Anyone mind telling me what the real difference is between the two??

Nothing; CHR/Pop and Top 40 refer to the same format.

Whatever Happened to...? (December 14, 1985) - 98Q Vidalia, GA - Curiously, this one broadcasts at 97.7 despite a branding of 98Q. It's WTCQ, an AC station. No idea if they were AC back in '85 or not. Apparently they were an AT10 affiliate until that show ended, though as the schedule hasn't been updated since 2008 (!! - what the hell?), I have no idea what, if any, affiliations they have with AT40-related programs today. Oh, and they don't stream, either.
- 98 1/2 Houghton Lake, MI - WJGS then, WUPS now. They were a "middle-of-the-road" (MOR) station back in '85 until late in May of 1988, when they were sold and flipped to CHR as WUPS. They changed formats multiple times during the 90s, before finally settling on a Classic Hits format, though they've kept the WUPS call letters since '88. And yes, they are named after UPS - their longtime slogan has been, "We Deliver the Hits".
- KJR Seattle - We know the story on this one already; it was a "Great Radio Station" three weeks ago on 11/28/81.
- KIPA Hilo, HI - these call letters have played "musical radio stations" (no pun intended, think musical chairs ) for the past couple of years, but the station that had these in 1985 had them for 60 years before they lost their transmitter lease in 2007. They're 620 AM, KHNU today - an ABC-affiliated News/Talk station that is nonetheless also conservative, quite a flip from the former "Rainbow Radio".
- KUTA Blanding, UT - I wonder if this is the station that is now KBDX; it's the only station I can find licensed to Blanding, UT. They're currently an Oldies station.
- WWKX Nashville, TN - Despite the presence of AT40, this station would lose a ratings battle against Y107 (which is actually something of a heritage station for Nashville; they're still Top 40 today), and on August 13, 1987, WWKX went Classic Rock and became WGFX. Roughly sixteen years later, on August 11, 2003, they flipped to their current format, Sports Talk.
- Z101 KZMT Helena, MT - This might be a station that had been on the air for barely over a year by this point, as they were assigned these call letters by the FCC on October 8, 1984. They still have them today, only now they're Classic Rock.
- WFFX Tuscaloosa - We know the story on this one, too; it was still a "Great Radio Station" on 11/21/87 (four weeks ago).
- WWSW Pittsburgh - Why yes, 70s listeners, here's one of your stations! (Once the holidays are over, that is... ) Oddly enough, they were Top 40 (as WPEZ) until Labor Day in 1980, when they flipped to AC - so yes, here was another AC station carrying the show. In 1988, they flipped to Oldies, which they really still are (though technically they're more likely to be called Classic Hits). NOTE: This station did have a sister AM station, but the two did not share a simulcast until after the flip to Oldies. So, AT40 would only have been heard on the FM.
- WIDS Russell Springs, KY - Now Gospel.
- KSKG Salina, KS - Now Country.
- KVSL Show Low, AZ - Now Adult Standards.
That's it for that show. dukedeb has mentioned to me in this week's 70s show (the Premiere one of 12/20/75, I'm assuming), Casey mentioned his hometown station, WTRY. They're now WOFX, a Fox Sports station - though like the former KIPA, they also had their original call letters for 60 years (in this case 1940 to 2000).

I'd thought I'd add my two cents here-WPIX-FM in New York City ran "American Top 40" from 1971-1978-WPIX was known as the station that bounced around from format to format-They've played everything from top forty to light jazz-The current format is all-news which has gone over like a lead balloon-WXLO (99X) carried the show for a shorter period from 1978-1980-Within a year, the station flipped to an R&B format & became WRKS-In the summer of 1980,WNBC carried "AT40" on Sunday mornings & was about to renew their contract with ABC Watermark-Unfortunately,ABC Watermark announced that the show was only going to be heard on stations that were owned by ABC Radio-Therefore,in late November 1983,"AT 40" was heard on WPLJ until it was cancelled in 1995.

Anyone mind telling me what the real difference is between the two?? Actually, there is an ever so slight difference. CHR/Pop usually targets the 18-34 audience, whereas Top 40 is a little more inclusive, going for the 18-54 market. This means CHR will cut out songs with strong AC feel to them. Being that this station is in Dallas, this change took place around the time country started to get shut out of the BB Top 40.

Did radio stations pay to get mentioned? I ask this because the affiliates in Jacksonville would only get mentioned every so often, meanwhile it seems like a lot of other stations got mentioned a lot. Was it market size that determined that?

I did not think stations had to pay in order to be mentioned, at least international ones. For example, AT40 in Spain was aired by provincial radio stations, at least 52, some of them were mentioned during 1988 and the show was technically sent only to the mother station in Madrid and in meaning of payment , only Madrid counted. Stations from Almería, Badajoz, Cádiz , Pamplona and Murcia, as far as I remember were mentioned with Casey, more of them with Shadoe.

Ah yes - I always forget about the brief stints on KFAB and WOW. Weird that AT40 was not in the Omaha market during all of 1983. I do know that KQKQ dropped the show in late '88/early '89 - as a matter of fact I called the radio station when I went to listen one Sunday night and there was no show, and the young gal told me that Shadoe "was being dropped all over the place". AT40 resurfaced a few months later on KXKT "The Kat", which was a new top 40 station at the time, but flipped to country in late 1992. Not sure if any Omaha station picked up Shadoe's AT40 after that. I believe that sometime in 1990 or so, KQKQ picked up Casey's Top 40. It was early in '89 that Sweet 98 dropped show because I had to listen to 102.3 out of Lincoln NE with my FM antenna tied to curtain rod to listen to Shadoe. The "Kat" also ironically also flipped to a country format. Memories!!! I think it was 102.7 KFRX. I had a similar situation. Living in Grand Island, Nebraska, my AT40 station was KQKY out of Kearney from 1984 through 1989. KQKY dropped Shadoe in late 1989, and I did my best to pick up KFRX out of Lincoln.

Here's a Christmas bonus - a station listing from a Shadoe Stevens-era show! Whatever happened to...? (April 8, 1989) - The Eagle 97.1 Dallas, TX - It's KEGL again; they were an affiliate on 12/13/86, too.
- Fly 92 Troy-Albany, NY - dukedeb might not be happy to hear this one; this is the station that overtook WTRY back in the day. I forgot to mention for that one, though, that before going Sports, WTRY flipped to Oldies in 1986. As for this one, it's WFLY, and they're still a CHR station today. Oddly enough, though, the current AT40 left this station in 2005 for WKKF, as WFLY dabbled in a modern rock-leaning direction, that lately they're leaving behind - though I should also mention that WKKF is owned by Clear Channel, and WFLY is not.
- Kiss 105.5 Gainesville, FL - Well! Here's a holiday-fitting story for you. It's WYKS - another one that's still a Top 40 station today, and they'll be marking 30 years with the format this Christmas Sunday. In 1995, they moved a bit from 105.5 to 105.3, increasing coverage in the process. I don't know if they have the current AT40 or not, though - there's no schedule on their website.
- KDWB 101.3 Minneapolis - Here's a station with history! They originated at AM 630 in August of 1959, when Crowell-Collier Broadcasting Company bought the station and established a winning Top 40 format (already on their California stations, KFWB and KEWB). Before I continue, I'd like to point out - KDWB has not changed formats since 1959! Now, there's a heritage Top 40 station if I've seen one.
In 1976, the 101.3 FM frequency was purchased, and the station was transferred there, re-launching on Wednesday, September 15, 1976. They had heavy competition from rival WLOL throughout the 80s until a re-christening in 1988, which would've well been underway at the time of this show. Another major event happened around that time - it's this station that American exchange student Dean Cushman urged to play Roxette's "The Look". A few months later...it's this week's #1 song! - so it's probably no accident that this station earned a mention this week. There's lots more info to be told, but I've said enough - go check out Wiki for more. BTW, I don't have absolute proof that they air current AT40, but they're Clear Channel-owned and do play "On Air", so it stands to reason that they do.
- 99.5 WRNO New Orleans - At 4:00 AM on November 13, 2006, they flipped to Interactive Talk after having been Classic Rock since 1997. They're affiliated with both Premiere and Fox News Radio.
- 107 KROC Rochester, MN - While they don't have the history of KDWB, they do have the distinction of still being Top 40 today. Cumulus owns this one, though - and they have Billy Bush rather than AT40.
- BJ 105 Orlando, FL - WBJW, on their last legs of 16 years as a Top 40 station due to declining ratings. Roughly five months after this show, on September 14, they flipped to WOMX, a Hot AC station.
- The New Choice 92.5 Toledo, OH - WVKS. Their format was, and still is, more of an "Adult" Top 40 format, but this is not to be confused with Hot AC. Notably, this is a station that carried AT40 at the time of its revival in the late 90s, and they still have it today. Back at the time of this show, they competed against WRQN (a competition they would win), who oddly enough had Casey's Top 40. "The New Choice" branding probably comes from the fact that from 1981 to 1988, they were an AC station as WMHE, but 1988 saw a station sale and a return to Top 40. And, don't mix this station up with 80s, um, affiliate WRVF - they're down the dial at 101.5.
- K105 KDXY Paragould, AR - Now Country. I don't have a time of flip on this one.
- Eagle 106 Philadelphia - I told this story back on 11/21/87...this is that station that, as WEGX, a "CHR/Urban" station, drew listeners away from then-affiliate WCAU, leading to them flipping right around the time of that show. As for this one, I'll re-iterate my findings: On 3/12/93, they flipped to WJJZ Smooth Jazz, which they had until 2006. These days, they're Mix 106 WISX, a Hot AC station.
- V100 Charleston, WV - WVAF. I'm not sure what their format was at the time of this show, but they're AC now.
- WQUH Florida - I cannot for the life of me spell the pronounciation of the town mentioned for this one! Oddly, there must've been a flip to Smooth Jazz after this show, but even that didn't last long - on 4/1/92, they flipped to AC, and then on 3/31/94, they flipped back to Top 40 as WMXZ. Today, though, the format is Hot AC. (EDIT: It's DeFuniak Springs - thanks dukedeb!)
- The OZ Network - St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada - CHOZ. On August 17, 2009, they flipped to Active Rock. By the way...remember the flap in Canada over the slur in "Money For Nothing" earlier this year? Well, here's the station whose airing the song uncensored started all that!
New to the American Top 40 family this week: - Magic 103.7 KOMJ Omaha - They changed call letters to KXKT in early 1990, but remained a pop station until sometime in the summer or early fall of 1992, when they flipped to Country, which they remain today. Special thanks to wahoo for this info.

WQUH is in DeFuniak, later referred to as DeFuniak Springs. They started playing AT40 on 4/4/87.

Here's a Christmas bonus - a station listing from a Shadoe Stevens-era show! Whatever happened to...? (April 8, 1989) New to the American Top 40 family this week: - Magic 103.7 KOMJ Omaha - Well, this one didn't last too long with these letters, only having them from 1988 to 1990. That was the year that they flipped to their current Country format as KXKT.
Interesting--as you may have read in my earlier exchange on this thread with kahunaburger, KOMJ picked up the show after KQKQ (which aired AT40 from April 1984 until early 1989) dumped the show and eventually picked up Casey's Top 40 instead. KOMJ went on the air in early 1988 with a format of 1960's, 70's and 80's music - a very common format now, but pretty new and unique at the time - but eventually evolved into CHR by '89. It's call letters did change to KXKT (change of ownership probably?) in early 1990, but it remained as one of Omaha's top 40 stations until the late summer/fall of 1992 when it flipped to country, which is still its format today.
