American Top 10 is a show that counts down the Top 10 songs on the Adult Contemporary charts, plus they have an AT10 spotlights, hits from years past, plus stories from artists, and the Long Distance Dedications. This has been bugging for some time now, but I have been wondering, which segment on the show do you think gets the most attention? Since the show is called, American Top 10, it's based on the Top 10 songs on the AC charts, but it's really hard to say which segment gets the most attention. Besides the Top 10 AC songs, most of you would probably say that the AT10 spotlight would get the most attention since it is a segment that has a theme connected to it. Some of you may say the non-themes extras gets the most attention since there are as many as 14 songs featured on the non-extras segment, including the 3-4 songs with stories connected to it. But we can all agree that the segment that gets overshadowed by all of the others is of course, the Long Distance Dedication segment since only 1 LDD is played. I guess we all have different opinions on which segment on American Top 10 gets the most attention.

I know its a countdown show, but the actual chart seems secondary to everything else to me. Between the extras, spotlights, and a chart that moves slower the OJ trial, it is second fiddle to everything else.

The OJ trial was a 50 yard dash compared to how stagnant the AC chart is. Jeez, a song goes from 10 to 9 to 10 to 10 to 9 back to 10....ZZZZZZ. And here's Kelly Clarkson at #1 for the 857th week in a row... But I do love the spotlight and the LDD's and Casey, so I listen... ;D

I'd have to cast my vote for the spotlight. It's the only feature other than the top 10 that's regularly mentioned in the show open and promos.

I agree, and I really think that's what Premiere aims for to be the main krux of the show.

Plus, in the last year the AT20/AT10 crew have downplayed the Long Distance Dedication tremendously. What was once an hourly feature on the AT20 shows, is now only once a show - and is given much less attention. But, by the same token, I don't consider it a bad thing as I feel the show flows better with only 1 dedication. 3 LDD's a show - especially on a 3 hour show, was a bit much.

I actually feel that the Top 10 songs and the AT10 spotlight are by far the segments that get the most attention on American Top 10. Also, as for the non-theme extras, I really don't look at them as non-theme extras, instead I just call them as, Hits From Years Past, and as for the non-theme extras with stories connected to them, I call them extras, as Casey says on the show, Coming up, an American Top 10 extra. That's how I look at it.

On this weeks AT 10 (07/01/05) nearly every song besides the Top Ten songs and a few "extras" was connected with the "spotlight" theme ("Big acts from America").
This makes once again clear that they understand it as the central part of the show, i think.

Play whatever you want and call it "Spotlight" ....... Already one and a half years of AT10, but I still miss the clear concept for this show.

From what people have mentioned, with the spotlight being effectively the entire show (other than the current top 10) this week, this week's show is the only "exception" to that "rule." As for the Americana theme running through the full show...it's a nice tribute to TWO things if you ask me. One, this great country of ours. And two, that it's the 35th anniversary of Casey counting them down for the first time.

Seems to be NOT an exception for the America Weekend. They've done it again this past weekend with the Number 2 Songs. All non countdown songs seems to be in the N°2 spotlight. Makes it difficult to follow the show. They should keep one method or the other. Still making me no friend of the whole "Spotlight" thing, wich was stolen from Dick Clark. But he did it much better, wich a clear concept. What I really hate within AT10 are the 60's and early 70's songs. They belong to an all oldies format, not an AC show of today.

Radioman,
Most AC stations in the US have some 60's and early 70's in their rotation, therefore it is only fair that AT10 gives them airplay. I've never heard a 60's or 70's song on AT10 that I haven't heard on a regular playlist for an AC station.

Exactly, Brett. Also, the inclusion of those few "oldies" songs has allowed the show to be heard on a few "oldies" radio stations across the country...so that's a good thing too.

I don't mind hearing the songs from the 60's and 70's on AT10. In fact, my AT10 affiliate here in Detroit, WNIC-FM, plays songs from the 60's and 70's every now and then.
