American Top 20 AC (mainstream) is now officially American Top 10, which airs this weekend March 20-21, 04. I personally haven't heard any info about the shows so any advance details from radio programmer is greatly appreciated.
From my area, KBIG Los Angeles only airs the American Top 20 Hot AC version so I won't be able to hear it this weekend.

So let me get this straight, American Top 20 AC now becomes American Top 10. Interesting name change. The thing that I'm a little confused about, well actually, a lot confused, is that the new AT10 will play the Top 10 AC songs of the week, but the new show will air as many as 17 extras. Now that is a lot of extras. I read on the "This Week on AT20 and AT10 page" is that there will be a theme featuring the extras, and non-theme extras. With all of those extras, it seems that the extras are going to dominate the show. It would be great if somebody would give us more information on the format of this new show, because I am very confused about it. I guess I will have to listen to the show this weekend to hear what the format of this new show will be like.

So has anyone heard the show yet? I know it airs Saturdays in some places. I may be able to catch some of it tonight on the internet. WLIT in Chicago airs Casey from 9 to midnight. I might not hear the beginning though. Does Casey give a longer intro than usual explaining the format of the show? Or does he just say "the top TEN hits in the USA, plus big hits from the 80's, 90's..." etc. I guess I will find out for myself when I hear it (we no longer have a local affiliate so I have to listen on the net) but if anybody has any first impressions already, please post them. later, Jeffster

Well I think the "Theme Extras" are going to make the show sell.
AC radio these days so gold based that the concept of a countdown show is retarted unless you Casey Kasem or Dick Clark.
AT10 is really going to help Casey Kasem win AC stations.

I haven't heard much as yet, but here's some info on what I've heard so far...
* The opening theme is the same as AT20/AC's old opening theme. Casey's open is basically the same as always ("Hello again everybody and welcome to American Top 10..." ). He identifies the theme in the open and does the recap of last week's top 3. * There are new jingles on the segments, and the number jingles sound different as well. * It is (obviously) an extras-dominated show. This was the point of the change. AC radio, as is pointed out elsewhere in this thread, is a gold-based format. From what I've heard so far, there is one countdown song per segment.
I have no complaints...but be warned that this is a much-different sounding show than you're used to. The countdown is still there, but is somewhat secondary. You still hear all of Casey's other trademarks, however...the stories behind the songs, long distance dedications, etc.

What does Gold-based mean?

Gold in radio terms means that songs that have stood the test of time.
That means hits from the 70's, 80's, and the 90's.
Gold is NOT current.

Well I am listen to AT10 via WLIT and I can tell you that everything that was stated early was true.
Their are new jingles and I think their is only a "Number 10" sing since each segement starts off with a current.
The segements are reduced to 3 segments per hour. This helps very much with the current songs, and helps streach the show. They can play only one song per segement expect for the final in which they can wrap up the show with the number two and number one songs of the week.

I guess, this is a result of AC chart being more static these days, not much happening from week to week, so producers are trying to make more dynamic show, where there are only 10? (depending on debuts) songs repeating each week and extras will be chaning from week to week.
And in the meantime AT20 (HotAC) stays the same format...

I got to listen to it this weekend. When I first heard about AT20 changing to AT10, I had no idea how it would work out. I'm glad they switched it to fewer segments per hour.
Plus, now it's no longer necessary to specify between the AC and Hot AC shows. Now we can easily say either AT10 or AT20 without confusion.
I just started the 3rd hour, but so far I like it. Themed extras make the show more effective. Now that they cut down to 10, I wonder if they'll switch back to using R&R's AC chart.
This just in - at the end of the first segment in Hour 3, Casey says "coming up on AT20, a long distance dedication...". That's right, folks, he erroneously says AT Twenty. Small mistake, granted, but isn't it interesting to catch those little mistakes.

I have to agree about AT20 AC becoming AT10. It seems like the same 20 songs were on the chart. It seemed like only one song would drop out. Then, the song that comes replace it, was a song never played on AC radio. For instance, how often was the recent Rod Stewart/Cher song played on the AC station outside of the countdown? Also, sometimes a song that would drop out, would just reappear. I did notice Casey saying AT20 in the 3rd Hour of AT10. I do like the new jingles on AT10! They need to update the AT20 Hot AC jingles. I'm curious about the new AT10 ending theme jingle. After Casey says his trademark ending and the sponsors are read, does the ending jingle continue for a couple of minutes? Or does the ending jingle just fade after 30 seconds after the sponsors? WNIC in Detroit cut the jingle about 5 seconds after the sponsor today.

They can play only one song per segement expect for the final in which they can wrap up the show with the number two and number one songs of the week. Actually, the number one and number two songs are in different segments. The one with the number two song kicked off with an AT10 Archive song, since Casey teased a story about the number two song before the commercial break. Then, before they played the #1 song, they also played an AT10 Archive song. It was kind of funny, because in the outro, Casey said "Twenty years ago, back in 1984, that was the number one song on the pop chart, "Dancing In The Dark" by Bruce Springsteen. And that means we're up to the number one song this week". What, are they going to play that song by the Boss every single week before unveiling the number one song? Or maybe Casey should instead say, "Now we're up to THIS week's number one song". I like the themed extras, too (the Spotlight, as Casey calls it). This week it was members of successful rock groups that have had successful solo careers as well. Also, notice that the AT10 Archive songs are not necessarily from this time of year, as they have been in the past? At first, when they played "Sister Golden Hair" by America, I thought that maybe they were doing that one because it was coming out about this time back in 1975. But when they started playing Archive songs that were hits in July (as the aforementioned "Dancing In The Dark" was) and November, I figured out they'd deviated from the practice of playing former #1 songs that were hits from the same time of the year. That makes it more interesting. So at least there are still three non-themed extras (of course, on weeks when there are only two LDD's, there'll probably be three, although replacing the hole left by one less LDD with an additional Spotlight song would be cool). All in all, while IMO it would have been better to leave the show as it was, I do like the way they're doing the new show.

Maybe it will be three LDD's again.
I bet their were thinking about making AT10 a two hour show rather than a three hour one. 3 LDD's are helpful in filling in the time.
I would think Casey would have played two currents back to back in the final segement.
Like the Ryan Seacrest hosted AT40 the new AT10 needs to be worked on. Then again when the orginal AT40 started even that needed some work.
