Nearly impossible to predict. However, every decade has had its own musical phenomena that, at least for a time, dominated most of the pop charts. These have always been followed by somewhat of a "cool down" period of younger pop before the next generation began.
1950's: the original rock n roll generation *slow down-surf sound, early R & B acts like Aretha and Supremes 1960's: British invasion /psychodelic age *slow down-southern rock/acts like Jackson 5, Osmonds, etc 1970's: Disco *slow down-elevator music of the very early 80's 1980's: MTV generation (which brought a TON of new acts) *slow down-the kiddie pop of Paula Abdul, Jets, Mariah, etc 1990's: Grunge / modern rock (most big pop stations went alternative from 1994-1997) *slow down-Boy bands and disney dancers (Christina, Britney, Backstreet, N Sync, 98 degrees, etc) 2000's: Hip Hop-had been big for a while but the upper regions of the airplay charts were dominated by hip hop ("Yeah" was the #1 song of 2004) *slow down-right now hip hop is slowly easing up and we are seeing more and more of the "glam" pop like Fergie and the American Idol acts
So, what is the next generation / phase we will see? Supposedly there's a whole new slew of acts that are about to surface from the UK and elsewhere.
