This may or may not be related but the "Hard Habit To Break" LDD on the 11/23/1985 AT40 that I'm hearing right now is kinda similar only the girl did not wish death on her father (she was rebellious and hardly spoke to him though) and the father was killed in an auto accident. The "Hard Habit to Break" dedication was really sad. I didn't actually cry, but it was close enough to think about the pain she must have felt. I also wonder if it was properly placed in the countdown--after the Thompson Twins' upbeat though mid-tempoed "Lay Your Hands On Me"--in light of Casey's vehement complaints on that subject just two months earlier.

As you mentioned, the Thompson Twins' song was mid-tempo whereas "Dare Me" by the Pointer Sisters was a very rocky, upbeat song. Now, if they placed the song after "Burning Heart" or "Never", Casey might have flipped his top again.

I had always thought that AT40 was produced with Casey first reading from a script & recorded, and his vocal is later merged with each record by the engineer.
Judging from the dead dog rant, he must have been in the studio just like a DJ while the actual records were played. Otherwise he wouldn't have been upset about a sad dedication after an uptempo song.

From what I understand, at that time Casey would have the end of the record played for him so he could get the proper "feeling" reading the outcue script. Not sure if they even bother doing that anymore.

Not sure if they even bother doing that anymore. Listening to Casey's AT20 and AT10 today, it seems that the LDD's fit in pretty well with the show's pacing; it helps that they are adult contemporary shows (especially AT10) and thus the music is softer in tone. I haven't noticed any really glaring shifts from an uptempo record into a sad dedication. As for AT40 today, they don't seem to do "Long Distance Dedications" in the traditional sense anymore. Ryan will insert some requests from listeners as extras, with the listeners' reason for wanting to hear them, but he seldom if ever reads off a full, often sentimental letter from the listener as Casey and Shadoe did.

Hearing the long distance dedication on this week's AT40 from 3/19/88 made me remember this topic. It's about a boy whose father left him and his mother 11 years ago and never came back. The boy thinks about why his father left and whether he loves him. Real touching.
The song dedicated was Elton John's 'Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Words'.

i have two that made me ball not from the classic years but from 1998 With Guest Host Steve Street and 2004 on AT10 and AT20. There's a good reason they made me cry! They were my dedications. The first one I wrote back in 1998 when I was living On long Island New York. It was to my X Girl Friend / Fiance from college. Let's just say I had done some stuff (Not Cheating) I was not proud off and I was trying to tell her how sorry I was since her dad took her out of the college saying I was a bad influence on her and telling us we could never see each other again. The song I dedicated was "My Heart Will Go On".
The second one Chocked me up even as a wrote it. I remember the words just pouring out. The story. For the past couple of weeks leading up the that Thursday I had a sneaking suspicion something was up with my mom. On that Thursday In June my mom called me. She had just been at the doctor and told me she had cancer of the vocal cords. The dedication just poured out how she had taken care of me and I would be there for her. The song was the very appropriate "A Song For Mama" by Boyz II Men. I cried and still cry every time I hear that dedication so has my mom and even all her friends when she would play it for then. The good news After that summer her cancer was gone! She is in really good shape now 5 years later
my copy of the show is not in great shape. if anybody has the show (both AT10/AT20) from July 10, 2004 with my dedication and I'm looking for both AT10/AT20 shows and is willing to send me a CD copy it would be greatly appreciated. I can't trade right now because my burner is not working but these shows would mean a lot to me.
Thanks Nick top40man@optonline.net

Hello! Does anyone have any idea where I can find a copy of a specific LDD? My mom had one read in the fall/winter of 1987 and she just accidentally broke her only copy. I told her I would try to track another one down. Thank you for your help!

My mom wasn't exactly sure of the date but said either October or November of 1987. The song was Somewhere Out There and her letter was about the son she had to give up for adoption.
Thank you for your help!

Thank you for your help! I looked it up and the only show with that dedication from those months is November 21, 1987. Do you need the whole show or just the part with the LDD?

Hello again! Sorry to be a pest, but would it be possible to get a copy of the whole show? If it's too much trouble/hassle just let me know. Just thought I would check.
Thank you again for all your help!

I might be a few years too late, but I just heard the LLD you were looking for. It was on the 5/7/88 episode of AT40. They just playing it on the IHeartRadio AT40 station.
