Buying the Joel Whitburn book with al the Top 100 charts in the 80s has inspired me to try to collect ALL (yes, all) of the songs that hit the Top 100 in the 80s. Yes, I realize this may be impossible.... but it always surprises me what groups of people online can do when they make it a team effort. I was thinking we could do it and then distribute the mp3 set to a lot of the guys on here that helped through some kind of trading tree kind of setup. Guy A sends to B who sends to C, etc.
I'll have MANY of the hits as Im pretty into 80s music collecting. Most of them Im thinking Ill have issues with are the oens that broke regionally and then peaked nationally at #92 or something.
So, whose in? ny other "children of the 70s and 80s" wanting to do this?
Itd be neat if we could get another group going on the 70s side of things also.
Thanks, Shawn

Sounds excellent... of course, I'd have to unpack all my CDs again.

I can do it from my record player, yes. Ill have to do some of that myself. Ill start all of this in January after the season, but I also wanted to get you guys thinking about it also..... How many of you guys also have the Whitburn book with all the Top 100 charts? Anyone? It may be easier to coordinate that way. Thanks, shawn

Hi,
There are already individuals online that have done this. I can't remember exactly where I obtained this (I didn't originally collect/produce it) but I have a multi-DVD set containing the top 300-500 mp3 songs from each year in the 80's. I'm not sure if this comprises every top 100 hit from each year, or just every top 40 hit and extras, etc. I just know it's a really nice music collection that really makes my iPod jump. I also have the top 100 from each year from the mid-1950's through 2001 or so as a separate set.
Another collection I have contains the top 200-300 R&B songs from several individual years in the 80's.

Id like to get that R&B set from the 80s...
The sets Ive seen for pop 80s have consisted of every Top 40 hit. Or most of them. I really havent checked them against lists and such, but they usually say they are all the top 40 hits. I can see this will be an undertaking but it should be fun hunting some of them down also.
Thanks, shawn

Ok, theyre invited. We own the music already.... many of us do. We arent selling anything and - to date - we havent illegally downloaded anything for this. And frankly... Id rather not. I think the RIAA has many bigger fish to fry. They didnt really go after all the guys making "mix tapes" in the 80s. I hope his thread doesnt turn into an RIAA thread, but please feel free to start one... an and also aim it at everyone who has an "illegal" copy of an AT40 show... or currently records one on XM. Theyve also never really hammered the massive bootleg market online either. Nor have they really taken a lot of friends to court for borrowing CDs from another friend instead of buying it. This, I have a feeling, will be more comparable to a group of five friends sharing music than it will be a massive illegal distribution of 200 CDs to 400 people. On with the project.... but thanks for the rain.

I'm sure some of these songs are out of print now anyway, so the RIAA wouldn't be losing anything as far as those songs are concerned.
It would be a different matter for songs that are still in print. Even some that were only very minor hits were on albums that were hugely successful and are still in print.

I just wanted to say, this is nothing different than the good old File Sharing, wich you know is difficult in law and order. I mean you can do that project ..... and there will be hardly any action against it, because this is too small to follow. But it is file sharing and you know about that ......

I for see a problem attaining the song American Memories by Shamus M'Cool Witch hit #80 in 1981 because it was listed as being worth 75 bucks in Joel's last top pop book. Does anybody know where I can get a copy of this song as E-bay and GEMM don't have any listing for Shamus M'Cool. If we can't find this song then theres at least one 80's chart hit that we'll be missing. If we can on the other hand there the rest should be easy at least on record if not on CD.

I know this is a bit off the path from the 80's project, but since AT40 only did a top 50 for 1979, I have always wanted a collection of songs #100-#51 for that year. I know the statistician at AT40 did rank the top 100 at the time because I remember seeing a list that had "Gold" by John Stewart at #51. Does anybody have this list and better yet, does anybody have a collection of songs #100-#51 for '79 in order? Thanks - and sorry to take you away from the subject at hand.

Who knows if anyone will read this, since it's been a long while since this string has been touched but - as far as I know, you will not find American Memories by Shamus M'Cool. It's impossibly rare. There was a complete collection for sale posted on some site years ago with this in it, for 300K. I have it on MP3 as well as every other top 100 hit but that's probably going to have to do. However, I can assure all of you that every other top 100 hit does exist and can be found because I have every one of them on CD or Vinyl. The really rare ones you have to get on 45 - but they can be found.
