Listening to the 9/5/87 show as "Love Power" by Dionne and Jeffery comes on at number 12 and it reminds me of something that, well, I need reminding of!
Are there songs that you hear now on a show and you have no recollection of that song being out at that particular time? That's me and "Love Power". I listened to AT religiously in 1987, certainly listened to the radio, and I don't ever remember hearing the song during that time! It was certainly played on the radio, and of course AT, but I have no recollection of it charting that high or it being a hit during that time. Oh, and I don't hate the song either...I just can't remember its chart life.
Any song or songs do that for you?

"Silent Lucidity" by Queensryche. I remember hearing a lot of the Top 10 hits around spring of 1991, but that one I don't recall hearing until after its success. I also wasn't a regular AT40 listener at that time, even though I did catch parts of shows around then.

When I was building my music library in the 1990s, I was looking for those "long lost" songs from the 80s. Came across that one, and for some reason, I thought it was from 1983. Has that earlier 80s sound (to me, anyway), and both artists charted with solo hits in 1983. Well, to my surprise, later found out it was from 1987. I'm pretty good with remembering when songs charted, but there was a time when that one got lost on me. It's on one of the many 80s compilation CDs that came out in the 90s. And, like you, I listened to AT40 as often as I could; local station aired it on Sunday nights, but then moved to Sunday mornings, which made it a little more challenging for me to catch the full show because of church, family outings, etc. I'm sure I have more to add, but this is a great example. 🙂

The only reason I knew it peaked at #12 was I received the greatest hits in 1993, on the back it said it peaked at #12, and I thought "did this song chart after Heartbreaker" in 1983, before reading a little closer and I think it actually gave the exact date it peaked at #12 in 1987. I was floored six years later not having any recollection of this but could darn well tell you the chart movements of Alexander O'Neil's "Fake" and, say, "Holiday" by The Other Ones but had no recollection of Jefferey and Dionne. Too funny, my friend!

I made a comment years ago that if there was a top 20 song that didn't peak in the top 10 during 1983, there is no way you don't remember the song. However, if there was a top 20 song that didn't peak in the top 10 during 1987, there is a strong chance you might not remember the song. I never thought of "Love Power" being one of those songs, but it is a prime example for me now!

It peaked at #15 on Radio and Records so it was probably more of a sales hit than an airplay hit. Although I just checked an old Billboard magazine for playlists from that time and it was definitely played on a couple of New York stations I listened to. So I don't know, maybe I just glossed over it on the radio back then.

I don't have any recollection of hearing Love Power during its chart run in '87 either. And I was listening to a lot of Top 40 radio and remember the rest of the top 20 from the time it peaked very well.
Same for The Breakfast Club's Right on Track from spring of '87, and Night Ranger's Sentimental Street in '85.

BY the way, Love Power, reached #1 on the A/C chart (Billboard) and Top 10 on the Black Singles chart.
