This past weekend's 7/21/84 show featured Dan Hartman's "I Can Cream About You" moving up three notches to #17. His song never climbed more than four notches in any given week on AT40 yet made it up to #6. That's pretty amazing! A song with smaller moves up the chart was "Love Hurts" by Nazareth from '76. While "Love Hurts" debuted way up at #25 on AT40, the song never moved up more than two notches on its way to a #8 peak. Some songs just take awhile to make it into Top 10 territory.
What other songs made the Top 10 without having a large leap within the Top 40? To me, a song moving up six notches is a good move... so maybe for now, we keep this to songs which never moved up more than five notches while on AT40.

Would "Please Don't Go" by K.C. and the Sunshine Band be one of them?

Would "Please Don't Go" by K.C. and the Sunshine Band be one of them? "Please Don't Go" moved up 9 notches to #28 in its third week on AT40. Another song that meets the requirement is "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. Its largest move was five notches from #38 to #33 in their second week on AT40.

A number of those songs took a slow climb up the Hot 100. This thread is only reviewing small weekly climbers within the Top 40 that became Top 10 hits. Here's an example with its weekly chart movement: "Sentimental Street" by Night Ranger... 33 - 29 - 25 - 20 - 15 - 13 - 12 - 8 - 8 - then dropped down the chart. It never moved up more than 5 notches in a week within AT40 yet made the Top 10. That song only spent two weeks below the Top 40 when it premiered on AT40. "Golden Years" is a great example. That song never moved up more than four notches in any week it ascended on AT40. Thanks jmack19 !

America's "You Can Do Magic" never climbed more than four notches in any given week on AT40. It helped having a #27 debut... 27-23-20-18-14-12-11-9-8-8-8-8-8 before descending the chart.

I think "I Go Crazy" by Paul Davis should fit in this category?

I think "I Go Crazy" by Paul Davis should fit in this category? I should think so. I seem to remember that even Casey mentioned that the song never moved ahead more than three spots in any given week (or something to that effect).

"I'll Be" by Edwin McCain has one of the wilder chart runs. And even though it had one week where it jumped 6 notches, I think you'll understand why I submit this one for consideration:
38-35-34-33-27-28-28-27-26-24-26-25-26-28-28-28-27-24-25-25-23-21-17-14-14-13-13-12-10-9 before descending for an unbelievable fifth time during its chart run. And the fifth time wasn't the descending charm as it would go back up one more time on its way out of the 40.

Yeah, that was one wild chart run for sure...I'll be hearing it soon enough, as I'm going through the 1997-1999 shows currently.

"Key Largo" seemed to have a long run between its debut in the top 40 and its peak at #8. Does it qualify?

"Key Largo" seemed to have a long run between its debut in the top 40 and its peak at #8. Does it qualify? I checked and you're right. The only time it climbed more than 3 spots was during its first two weeks after it debuted. I also found another 1982 song with a climb like that: "Gloria" (39-34-30-26-21-18-17-14-13-9-4-4-2)

I looked over the chart runs of all six of Dr. Hook's top-ten records. It was a bit surprising that "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman," which peaked in its 18th week on the Hot 100, didn't qualify. But their next, and biggest, top-tenner did:
"Sexy Eyes"...31-26-22-18-15-13-10-9-8-6-5-5
