Two #1's from 1974 (Barry White & John Lennon) don't accumulate enough points to make the Top 50--I guess not surprising based on their short chart runs.

Two #1's from 1974 (Barry White & John Lennon) don't accumulate enough points to make the Top 50--I guess not surprising based on their short chart runs. 1974 is a good year for this treatment, I think. With so many songs being allowed to make #1, DANCING MACHINE, especially, doesn't come out looking like the 40th biggest hit of the year (or close to that) because it didn't make #1. I was surprised to see Marvin for 1973. I'm so conditioned to assuming it's either Dawn or Flack that year.

I have to try to recondition myself to not think of The Captain and Tennille having the #1 song of the year after almost 50 years.

I used to do a few year end charts that only were figured from Top 10 song peaks, but unfortunately those lists are Gone With the Wind. I can't recall but I think I only did a Top 40 for the year(s) I did (1976-78). I do remember that I got to do my first year end countdown of the Top songs of 1979 at the first station I worked at, with the list being from the Radio & Records A/C chart. This was in a small town in Alabama and two high school girls came up to the station and sat in with me for a couple of hours. Looking at the chart reminds me that I didn't recognize a few of the songs on the year end survey, since my 18 year old brain was more into the Knack and Supertramp than Anne Murray and Orsa Lia (who?).

Speaking of 1979, I was just listening to a 1971 Cash Box Countdown yesterday and heard you say something I had missed before. Frank Mills played piano on STAY AWHILE. Knowing this makes me even less of a Frank Mills fan than I had been a couple of days ago. "This is not one of those things that is "so bad, it's good." It's just bad." www.totalmusicgeek.com/2008/05/bells-stay-awhile-1971.htmlSomething tells me these lyrics would not be as warmly received in 2024 as they were in 1971 - Into my room he creeps, Without making a sound "Creeps" eeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwww

Vince, if you ever feel like doing 1965, I think that would be interesting. Seeing in Whitburn's Top Pop Annual (I think?) for decades that MRS BROWN YOU'VE GOT A LOVELY DAUGHTER ranked so much higher than CANT YOU HEAR MY HEARTBEAT conditioned me to believe that MRS BROWN was a much bigger hit, but that was based purely on #1 and multiple weeks at #1. I think Billboard and AT40 and all of us are on the same page regarding a points system to be more reflective of reality, but the question might be - which points system? And of course we all have slightly or very different "realities" because of where we lived and what we listened to, but I guess there's an agreement that this is going for the largest possible sample size of those factors. And it's not just sales and not just airplay but both of those things. Our personal experiences were much more about airplay since we weren't in the music business. I guess that's where R&R comes in. I'll do the 60s after I finish posting the 70s. For the 60s, Billboard ranked Patsy Cline’s “I Fall To Pieces” at #2 for on the 1961 year end chart despite only peaking at #12. There’s no denying Patsy’s greatness, but really?
