CHART DATE: January 1 This is it -- the sixth and final phase of the Fantasy project.
Late 1991 into '92 was a transition point for the Billboard charts, as we all know. The same was true in my faux nation of Fantastan. To stay in step with the global shift in music media, the national trade mag, Black Vinyl Doughnuts, had just changed its name to Recordless World. The population was getting older, so to reflect the tastes of the public, the new RLW kicked off with what turned out to be a five-year experiment with a pop-country hybrid chart.
I steered clear of this time window all along because, at the time, I didn't care for a lot of the music of the period. There was too much polarization and fragmentation when it came to genres and subgenres. Too many of the bands' names were sounding like song titles. And I worried that the dynamics of a '90s Fantasy chart would be in stark contrast to Billboard.
But in the end, preparing this phase also presented the best opportunity to scope out music I hadn't heard in decades. The stuff I like most has a freshness and unpretentiousness about it that was too often missing from the '70s and '80s stuff that I was in such a rush to revisit. And if a gangsta rap record rubbed me the wrong way, well, it was supposed to! No one was forcing me to include any of that.
Besides, many of you on this forum are collecting, listening to, and really getting into the AT40 and CT40 countdowns from these years (which I admit I ignored completely). So there will be some interest. And it's a leap year with a leap day chart coming up. So enjoy!
