Inspired by my own soapbox chart analysis, I'm going back to the usual list making. There was an all-too-brief exchange in this thread about songs that made their Hot 100 debut within the top 40, then went on to miss the top ten. Because that would be a small sample, I'm stretching the criteria to top 50 and top five. Bill Wardlow regime only: * This was the goofy chart that had debut records at #44, #47, #48, #51, #57, and #58. (Was there a shift in the weighting of airplay vs. sales that kicked in that week?) Song | Debut/date | Peak/date | "Skin Tight" | #45, 9/7/74 | #13, 10/12/74 | "The Last Game of the Season" | #44, 11/15/75* | #18, 12/20/75 | "Somebody to Love" | #45, 11/27/76 | #13, 1/22/77 | "Lost Without Your Love" | #47, 11/27/76 | #9, 2/19/77 | "The Long Run" | #33, 12/8/79 | #8, 2/2/80 | "Sara" | #45, 12/15/79 | #7, 2/2/80 | "Hurt So Bad" | #46, 4/12/80 | #8, 5/24/80 | "Love the World Away" | #44, 6/21/80 | #14, 8/2/80 | "Late in the Evening" | #46, 8/9/80 | #6, 9/27/80 | "Tell It Like It Is" | #41, 11/22/80 | #8, 1/10/81 | "Hello Again" | #32, 1/31/81 | #6, 3/28/81 | "Her Town Too" | #38, 3/14/81 | #11, 5/2/81 | "Share Your Love with Me" | #47, 9/5/81 | #14, 10/24/81 | "Wasted on the Way" | #48, 6/26/82 | #9, 8/21/82 | "It's Raining Again" | #31, 10/30/82 | #11, 12/11/82 | "All Right" | #29, 1/22/83 | #12, 3/5/83 | "We've Got Tonight" | #36, 1/29/83 | #6, 3/26/83 |

In May 1975,Chicago debuted at # 17 with "Old Days"-It looked like a sure fire # 1 hit-Unfortunately,it stopped at # 5. This one is really hard for me to figure out. There is nothing I can think of about that record or that artist at that time - or the chart competition - which would explain such a loss of momentum, other than the one record by The Captain and Tennille. But you'd think Old Days still should have made it to #2. Possibly Old Days didn't appeal to teens, who couldn't relate? One story about the tune is that after a few times, Peter Cetera declared to writer James Pankow that he would no longer sing "Old Days" in concert. Said he felt ridiculous singing "Howdy Doody" and called the lyrics corny. Old Days - Wikipedia

What strikes me about this list is that none of these records hit #1, or even made it into the top 5. One well-known pre-Wardlow era example that did a bit better was John Lennon's "Imagine" in fall '71. #20 Hot 100 debut, peak position #3.

"All Right" #29, 1/22/83 #12, 3/5/83
The folks at Warner Bros must have been disappointed and mystified by that. Then the follow-up which was awful. A song with no hook.
The best LP cut was Release #3. A beautiful song. I wonder if anyone had argued for that to be the first or second release.
"The Last Game of the Season" #44, 11/15/75* #18, 12/20/75
#44 with a bullet. I remember seeing that in Billboard. Not knowing about the goofy chart situation it looked like this song I had never heard was going to be huge. Then I heard it on the radio and I was like really? Then just a couple of months later it was gone like Napoleon XIV.
Sorry but David Geddes was cringe. Only two hits, thank goodness.

While I didn't mind the over-the-top campiness of "Run Joey Run", with its nod to the '60s 'teenage death song' genre, I simply cannot listen to "The Last Game Of the Season". Just too much prefabricated maudlinness. And a 'plot twist' that anyone could see coming a mile away, even the 'Blind Man In the Bleachers'.

Does this count? In March 1991 "Rescue Me" by Madonna was the highest entry (even on Shadoe Stevens AT40) at #15 but it only got to #9.
And does this also count? In 2004 "My Happy Ending" by Avril Lavigne entered Ryan Seacrest AT40 at #13 but I guess came close of hitting #1.

After listening to the 8/2/75 show, one big letdown was “Someone Saved My Life Tonight.” That looked for sure that it would hit #1. The other ones I can think of too are “Old Days” and more than any song, “Thriller.” Still a disappointment that it only hit #4 after debuting so high.

Considering how many hits the album had already produced AND the record-breaking sales of the album, I think the fact that it got to #4 is sufficiently impressive. (And I STILL hate the fact they cut the Vincent Price "rap" from the single!)
