Do you remember the Rate-a-Record segment on Dick Clark's American Bandstand in the good old days of Saturday Morning TV when ABC TV would follow its Saturday morning cartoon lineup with this 1950's-1989 dance show? I know these songs made American Top 40 after being featured on American Bandstand's Rate-a-Record segment:
"Funky Town" by Lipps Inc. "Mony Mony" by Billy Idol "The One Thing" by INXS "New Song" by Howard Jones "Take on Me" by A-ha "I Want Her" by Keith Sweat
Can you think of other AT40 1970's-1980's that made the American Bandstand Rate-a-Record segment?

This wouldn't be from AT40's time as it's a 60s instance...but you don't get much bigger than, nor have a bigger turnaround, than from scoring only a 71 (!) on Bandstand...to becoming, quite simply, the biggest band in the land.
Of course I'm talking about The Beatles, and that 71 happened to their initial release of "She Loves You" in September 1963 - months before America was ready to go all in on them.

One of the great pop records of all time, but not the most danceable. So 71 it is, I guess.
