Since AT40's start, I wonder what the official span of birth years is for past to present AT40 artists.
With new singer Gayle on the charts today, I'm pretty sure her birth year is the most recent of any AT40 artists. She was born in 2004 and I don't believe there are any artists who have been on AT40 who were born 2005 or after. I'm pretty sure Gayle's birth year of 2004 is the most recent one.
But whose birth year is the earliest out of any AT40 artist? Should we count Louie Armstrong since "What a Wonderful World" was used as a long distance dedication? If we count that, he was born in 1901, which would put a 103 year birth year span between the earliest born and latest born AT40 artist. If we do not count Armstrong since his song was not on the official chart, who is the earliest born AT40 artist?

What a Wonderful World was in the Top 40 for three weeks in 1988 thanks to Good Morning Vietnam (from March 19 to April 2; peaked at #32).

According to Wikipedia, Gordon Sinclair was born on June 3, 1900. Pretty sure that Gordon's the winner. And, unlike 'Satchmo', who had been gone for nearly 17 years when "What a Wonderful World" charted in '88, Sinclair was still alive when his version of "Americans" charted in '74. He died in '84.

If Tony Bennett still hit the Billboard Hot 100 at age 95 going on 96, would he been in place for oldest?

If Tony Bennett still hit the Billboard Hot 100 at age 95 going on 96, would he been in place for oldest? No, because this is about birth year, not age. Bennett was born in 1925, a quarter-century after Armstrong and Sinclair.

Perry Como has to be one of the oldest - he was born in 1912, and was still hitting the top 40 in the early 70's.

Perry Como has to be one of the oldest - he was born in 1912, and was still hitting the top 40 in the early 70's. He may well be in third place. On AT40 twice, 1970-71's "It's Impossible" and 1973's "And I Love You So".

Found one even older, but not as old as Armstrong and Sinclair - Benny Bell, who hit in 1975 with "Shaving Cream", was born in 1906.

Bell was still around in '75--he lived until 1999, age 93.

"Shaving Cream" was actually discovered by musicologist/radio personality Barry Hansen alias Dr.Demento-He began playing the record on his show & the response was overwhelming-"Shaving Cream" made the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1975-It eventually peaked at # 30.

According to Wikipedia, Gordon Sinclair was born on June 3, 1900. I think this is the earliest one. So that puts a 104 year age difference between the earliest born and latest born AT40 artist.

Interestingly, had AT40 started just one year earlier then the earliest birthdate would have been pushed back to March 19, 1894 (as per Wikipedia), as that was the birthdate of "Moms" Mabley, whose rendition of "Abraham, Martin, and John" hit #35 in Billboard in July 1969.

Good catch--'Moms' even beats out Sen. Everett McKinley Dirsken, 1896-1969, whose spoken word recording "Gallant Men" reached #29 in early 1967. 'Moms' Mabley, known mainly gor her 'bawdy' comedy, was born in Brevard NC, known to all here as the home of our 'lead-off' station every week, WSQL.

Just this week, XG falls off with “Left Right” and the youngest member Cocona was born Dec. 7, 2005.
