Drummer Sander Lloyd "Sandy" Nelson passed away February 14 at the age of 83. Sandy began as a session drummer, playing on "To Know Him Is To Love Him" by the Teddy Bears, "Alley-Oop" by the Hollywood Argyles and "A Thousand Stars" by Kathy Young and the Innocents. In 1959, he released the instrumental "Teen Beat" which peaked at #4 on the Hot 100. The follow-up "Let There Be Drums" peaked at #7. Sandy also reached the Top 40 with "Drums Are My Beat" (#29). A motorcycle accident in 1963 resulted in the loss of Sandy's right foot and part of his leg. He would continue to make music through the decade, releasing several albums and singles that reached the lower rungs on the Hot 100 and the Bubbling Under charts. Obituary
